Hello, I am working on a condensed version of this for Smokeball to add to the top thread of the board and also an FAQ page in the future for D2OL. Meantime due to the large number of requests for this information because of the sudden conclusion of the ECCp109 project I am posting this information to help as many as possible to have a smooth transition. Bear with me as I edit as necessary.

D2OL

An exciting and fast growing project recently enjoying a surge of new membership and great interest is the D2OL Project, which with the combined efforts of all we have moved this team in only a few short weeks from 20th place worldwide to 7th and anticipate moving up a few more notches within a few weeks. Though you will find our members competing regularly in mini races or for team position we genuinely appreciate each and every member on our team no matter how small the production, and are committed to the overall goals of our mission statement as seen below:

The Drug Design and Optimization Lab (D2OL)? works to discover drug candidates against Anthrax, Smallpox, and Ebola and will soon be adding targets for the top 5 major Bioterrorism organisms. By simply downloading a no cost, non-intrusive software application, you can contribute the idle time available on your computer to fight biological weapons even when not connected to the Internet. The (D2OL)? software is downloaded to your personal computer and given drug candidates to evaluate. Once your computer receives tasks to execute, it begins a candidate evaluation process similar to finding the right key to fit into a lock. Distributed computing technology enables the process of sending hundreds of thousands of possible key combinations to all computing devices participating in the network and managing the results generated and returned to the network once you connect again to the internet. As a user, no intervention is required and the software executes as long as it is turned on, even when disconnected from the Internet. By applying our tested platform which uniquely takes advantage of all available computing devices within its community including personal computers, servers and eventually devices like TiVo(tm) and the Xbox?, we are applying massive, cost-effective computing power to drug discovery efforts. Using this computing power, our skilled methodology to identify targets (focusing on both drugability and the target's role in the pathogen's lifecycle) and collaborating with experts in computational chemistry and structure based drug design, the (D2OL)? initiative is working to realize a 10 fold speed increase and 1,000 fold improvement in the accuracy of our drug discovery efforts.

To learn more about D2OL the mission vist THE HOME PAGE where you will find links to many interesting topics related to your project.

To download the D2OL Agent visit THE DOWNLOAD PAGE where you will find downloadable files for each operating system, and instructions on installation.

For a full featured description of the Agent and its inner workings visit the help and support page which graphically and descriptively shows how to use your D2OL Agent.

After installing your D2OL you will want to REGISTER your agents Node to begin getting credit for your work and while there you can JOIN TEAM ANANDTECH!!

Each Node you may want to add can be added easily by MEMBER LOG ON and simply clicking the add node link after you have installed and registered each node using the same user name and login you used for your first node.

And finally enjoy viewing the TeAm STATS PAGE where you can see first hand how many Candidates/Conformers you have completed, your standings on the TeAm, with links to your profile, and links to Top Teams, Top Members, Top Nodes, Top Drug Candidates, broken down to ALL TIME, PAST WEEK, and TODAY. PLUS MUCH MUCH MORE! We Even have a D2OL Forum which you can register for as well and get support for all your needs or to simply discuss the latest.

We welcome all to join our TeAm AnandTech D2OL project and look forward to sharing this great life saving mission with you!

A nice tip for those who have to do an OS reinstall from Andy Jones...Thanks Andy!
To save your node id and stats info copy node.prp and stats.prp from the SengentD2OL\D2OL\res\ folder to somewhere safe, then if you need to reinstall for whatever reason, after reinstallation but before running D2OL copy them back to the same folder.
Just remember, keep a recent copy of stats.prp.

Another tip from TA Andy.. :)
"To check for incomplete files, preferably after hanging up press Alt-F while the dspy window is the active window."

Use this to check for incomplete candidates that can cause D²OL to hang.

Bump cause I think I found my next DC client.

1) It took about 7 seconds to download, install, register, and join TA. Both S@H and ECCP (now completed) flubbed up on my initial registration. Since I've been called a Lazy Cracker (in and out of the context of distributed computing), this is important.

2) You get a neat little spinning candidate thingy which will make it easier to install on friends/family's PC's (and the animation goes away when run in taskbar only).

3) D2OL has a practical reason to run. I won't argue that finding ET isn't practicle, but D2OL seems more "here and now" to me considering what's going on in the world these days.

4) I was running OGL until I read something about the dnet guys saying it's buggy?

I will keep it running for a while on just my main PC, to see how well the client behaves with other software. If all good, I should have a decent D2OL herd put together in a few months... ~10-20GHz worth, give or take.

---------

LOL, I just looked at the stats page. I'm ranked 1629 without submitting a single result!!! I spent almost 3 years with RC5 and never was ranked higher than 3000 :) , Oops, pehaps that's my team ranking. nm

Scooped from the TeamMacNN forum...gotta check out the competition ;)
One of the guys there figured out how to run the client invisible for the Mac, here is his text. I am no programmer so I don't know if anyone can glean any info that can be used on other platforms, but I remember someone was wanting to run the client hidden.

---I've managed to make a completely hidden version too.
If you comment out the jvm.params line in the launch.xen file and set the NSUIElement key in the Info.plist to the one that makes it not show in the dock for your OS version(1 on 10.1.x, 0 on 10.2.x), and then run via the command line with the controller:file method in the background, there is nothing in the Dock and no app visible (cept in Terminal). However, this makes stopping and starting difficult as you have to edit a file. I'm working on a little controller app to toggle it off and on, but spare time is minimal right now.---

Hope this helps somebody

But what if you hate humanity? I want to weed out the population. I hope S@H will be able to do that. When we contact the aliens, they will take and kill everyone they find unusable in their dilithium mines, so then all the useless humans are gone. We, as the "finders" will be the prison guards who are trustworthy enough to have cool laser stun rifles. We will use them to shoot the other humans who are not working hard enough, all while drinking a cold beer. Thus, my life goal is complete.

I already have D2OL installed on one of my machines, but I can not figure out how to get it out past Zone Alarm. I agree that it was insanely easy to set up. If anyone has any tips, please LMK.

That was me. I also saw that thread but since my clients are all pc's it doesn't really help my situation in any way I know of.

Minimun RAM requirement is 64MB so it doesn't use much. I'm not work right now so I couldn't tell you how much RAM my nodes are using.

I recommend 256-512 on a Server OS like Im running, prolly 256 on a standard OS..IF you use the machine as well as crunch. Crunching by itself I would recommend 128 anyway.

I just checked and my D2OL client is only using about 55MB of RAM.

30 macs should do awesome at D2OL. I hear that macs are powerhouses for the project.

I should be able to get atleast,
1) Dual 1GHz G4
1) 800Mhz G4 iMac
4) 400Mhz G4s
24) 400Mhz+ iMacs

:D
They all even have a network connection and run 24/7. (I could get more iMacs, like 200+ but thats a lot of work!)
