I have been looking this up for a while, and found this video on IBM's website, in the R50e series the optical drive is locked from the inside, so I have heared alot ask about how to remove it in case they needed to put something else in there and this is how : IBM's link
 
how do you like the R50e?... i'm purchasing one, and thought i'd ask (P-M 725 1.7ghz 40gb-hd 768mb-ram cdrw-dvd win xp pro)... using for around the house surfing & basic stuff...

The R50e is an excellent Laptop, very nice for the price, what a coincidence that you asked about buying one, I am selling my R50e in a week or so , loaded with an upgraded 5400rpm harddrive, and a gig of DDR400 of 2.5 Cas latency memory and I had it for 2 months, and it still has 10 months of Lenovo warranty on it, the R50e is in in mint condition PM me if you are intrested 😉
 
thanks for the offer & info... i pulled the trigger at newegg for $749 which included a free lenovo 512mb, and free shipping... me thinks the wife will be using... and BTW nice upgrading...

Well you made an excellent choice, the R50e is a nice Thinkpad, but you know it's no fully equiped T series, hence the price difference. But I hope your wife doesn't mind the trackpoint, because there is no touchpad on the R50e 😉.

And I hope you don't get any deadpixels on the R50e , because you need to have something like 7+ dead pixels on the laptop inorder to be eligible for a return. that above is the main reason why I don't purchase laptops from newegg.
