For the Webpage Experts out There... (Help Password Protecting a Site)

A friend of my father's has requested that I design a webpage for him. Part of this webpage is by subscription only, hence he wants to have a username/password setup. I've seen a couple tutorials on running a username/password site, but none of them seem to work for me. The site is hosted by doteasy.com and has the option to run nearly any type of file possible. My question: can anyone instruct me on how to password protect specific pages? I've tried the .htaccess/.htpasswd thing, but that didn't do anything! I've also tried copying and pasting from a couple sites, but that didn't do anything but irritate me. Anybody? Thanks!
