I know this is a little late, but I just picked up angL from Ihsahn (singer and driving force from Emperor). One of the tracks features none other than vocal master extraordinaire Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth lending his clean and death vocals to the song. The album is chock full of brutal riffage and sounds a lot like Emperor's last album, Prometheus, but far more melodic and more progressive. This CD is kicking my ass all over the place. I haven't even started listening to the other 3 CDs I bought with it. I cannot recommend it enough. Once again this proves that Ihsahn is a genius.

Older Emperor is damn good stuff, but I find the production (or lack thereof) tends to turn me off a bit. But Emperor definitely took black metal and brought it to a new level.

Marked for home viewing.

I've never been a huge black metal fan, but I really enjoyed Prometheus and and his first solo album. And I agree with you that the muddy production of Emperor's early stuff kind of made it hard to get in to.
