Uh, that's just stupid.
The cars that run that series have very little in common with a stock Mustang, including your 'stone age suspension.

Well, then I'm just stupid
j/k, I stand corrected. Has to be new parts involved there--adjustable coilovers? Doesn't seem stock to me. How much modification is allowed in this series?

If you had the choice, what would you choose:
1.a well sorted out solid read axle
2.a well sorted out fully independent suspension?
I would choose the irs.

If the Mustang was available with an irs as an option would you choose the solid axle rear end?

IRS was available in the past - It's known as the 2003/2004 Mustang Cobra...and they finished 12th in this particular Gran-Am raceSo the answer is no. Even Carol Shelby knows that the 3 link rear is good enough and is using in the '07 Shelby Cobra Mustang.
