hi,
i am sitting over a tough problem and i need some advice by people who know something about partitions, master boot records etc.
(Btw. i have tools like Partitionmagic, Norton Utilities and i am familair with them)
Problem:
I have a dual boot win Win98/SE and WinXP Professional.
- Win98/SE is on the first/PRIMARY partition C: which (right now) is active.
- XP is on the second partition D: (which is within an extended partition)
I want to swap the C & D partitions so *WinXP* goes on the first C: partition and D: somewhere else more behind on the HD.
* Question one:
Can i (using partitionmagic etc.) move my Win98 partition from C: to somewhere else (eg. to F🙂...and be still able to boot Win98 ? (When i try to move the partition to F: then it is not active anymore). Do i need a bootmanager ? Or...can i somehow EDIT the master boot record so i am able to boot into Win98 ????? (Right now when i chose to boot 98SE it boots from C:, when i choose XP it boots from D:...but what IF i put win98 eg. on F: ? )
* Can i (at all) somehow change the original partiton i installed XP on (D🙂 *without* a reinstall ? The partitionmagic doc says there are PROBLEMS renaming the boot partition XP is installed on...it's probably NOT a good idea.
However, if i'd have to reinstall XP then it would be ok (i havent installed a lot yet).
* Can i *backup* my data/settings in WinXP (which resides on D: now).....do a re-install of XP on C: - and THEN play back the backup with all my data/settings to the new XP on C: ? Would that be possible without giving me problems ?
