For the first time in my life, an account of mine (facebook) was compromised.

I recieved a text early morning from one of my friends that someone was trying to solicit money from them through my account.

I've been using the internet for 16-17 years now and I thought this only happens to PC illiterates or what not.

I just want to know if it was my fault (b/c I am very careful) or if it was just a victim by dumb luck.

I'm like, paranoid now. Scanned my PC with 5 different malware/spyware detectors.

This ruined my weekend.

Did you ever follow a link to what appeared to be facebook but required your login info? That is how they hacked a LOT of myspace accounts about a year ago. They did a real good job of making the site look identical. And the way they trick you into doing it is you get a message from a friend(who is hacked) and they have a link that looks normal enough but sends you to the page. I haven't heard of this happening yet on Facebook but it could happen.

Silly question but do you use a hotmail account linked to your facebook account that started with either the letters a or b?

They had a recent issue with those passwords being posted for a time.

Someone packet sniffing over wireless?

My primary PC uses Ethernet.

If you've ever logged in over wireless it could have been intercepted, though I would find that unlikely unless you hit someone's honey pot setup for that purpose.

Was your password easy to crack?

I would not mind my non existent face book account being hacked, but if hackers get your banking information, its a far bigger world of hurt. Believe me, try it, you will not like it.

But on the bright side, you just got a wake up call, your security system sucks and its so inadequate.

The cop out answer is that you are blameless, but the sad fact is that the bad guy hackers keep getting smarter and smarter.

And what worked yesterday may not work tomorrow.

Security system has nothing to do with it. Like I said, it could have been an easy phish. It is unlikely in most cases that someone would intentionally attack you as an individual. And you don't need any kind of anti-virus to protect you from the world if you know how to avoid the land mines.

Not much information to go by.

Guess-able password?

Do you answer the alternate "Security Question" with a common answer? Ten different names cover something like 80% of dog's names.

Was the text message actually from your friend? A very common way to get passwords is to get a message from a "friend" that directs you to a supposedly friendly site that is a fake and asks for your login.

And there's always malware. I'm seeing more and more "responsible people" getting hit with malware, including trojans.
