Right now the only consumer level DVD-R drive is the Pioneer DVR-S201 drive. It comes at a price of roughly $5,400. Each DVD-R disc costs roughly $40.

Please explain to my friend (who I will get to read this) what you think these prices will be like in 2 years. My friend believes in 2 years you will be able to get this drive for much less $$$, and discs that will cost roughly $3-6 in spindels of 50.

your friend is probably right. at least i hope so. look at cdrs. i bought one in april 98, SCSI 4x for 300 + another 100 for the SCSI controller card. now you can get a cheap 4x recorder that is rewritable too for about 100. depressing. and i bought very cheap (and awful) cd blanks for about 120 for a 100 spindle.

damnit, i dont wanna look like an ass :(

I cant believe that the cost of the drive will drop into the hundreds, and the discs drop from $40 to $6 each in 2 years time. There is still no market for them

When CDR's came out, there was not a market for them either. Well, there was, but only for the big cheeses. I remember paying someone $25 to burn me a CD when the 1x (I believe) CDR burners came out. Just wait, in two years time, data storage will be immense.
