Is there any difference between the SXGA, UXGA and Ultra UXGA screens for laptops for Dell notbeooks? In terms of visually? Can one tell the difference? Is it worth the upgrading?

Thanks

I prefer SXGA. UXGA is just too damn small/high resolution on a 15 inch screen for these old peepers to deal with, and XGA looks too playskool with it's low resolution.

I'm getting the Inspiron 8200 - coudn't....resist.....too much...temptation. Supposedly my choices are between super XGA, Ultra XGA and Ultra sharp, order lowest to highest. The 8200 only seems to come with SXGA. Oddly enough I can't find prices on anything in terms of screens. It gives me the screen option but no choices. HMM......does this mean there is no price difference? Didn't notice this before but it says "Limited Time Offer: Save $100 on Ultra XGA and UltraSharp UXGA displays."

Ps I feel honored to be advised by the Rossman and of course evryone else :p

Thanks

I can choose between screens and see the difference in prices on the main build page. It's right there with the processor choices.

First customize page:

15" Ultra Sharp? UXGA Display
15" Ultra XGA Display
15" Super XGA+ Display

Main build page:

Mobile Pentium®4 Processor,2.2GHz,15.0 Dell®UltraSharp? [add $530] This option may delay your ship date.
Mobile Pentium®4 Processor,2.2GHz,15.0 UXGA [add $480]
Mobile Pentium®4 Processor,2.2 GHz,15.0 SXGA+ [add $400]
Mobile Pentium®4 Processor,2.0 GHz-M,15.0 Dell®UltraSharp? [add $280] This option may delay your ship date.
Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor,2.0 GHz-M,15.0 UXGA [add $230]
Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor,2.0 GHz-M,15.0 SXGA+ [add $150]
Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor,1.8GHz,15.0 Dell® UltraSharp? [add $180] This option may delay your ship date.
Mobile Pentium®4 Processor,1.8GHz,15.0 UXGA [add $130] Dell Recommended
Mobile Pentium®4 Processor,1.8GHz,15.0 SXGA+ [add $50]
Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor,1.7GHz-M,15.0 Dell® UltraSharp? [add $130] This option may delay your ship date.
Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor,1.7GHz-M,15.0 UXGA [add $80]
Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor,1.7GHz-M,15.0 SXGA+

It would appear that the UXGA is $80 more than the SXGA and the Dell Ultra Sharp UXGA is $130 more than the SXGA.

I can choose between screens and see the difference in prices on the build page. It's right there with the processor choices.

The initial page I get to includes processor, OS, productivity software and display. It has options for all of them, but no prices listed next to it. Am I missing something? Did I go the wrong way?

Go to the next page. You still get to choose between procs and screens. WHY they give you the choice twice is beyond me.

at least they don't try to hide pricing from you with that one... on the desktops you basically have to have to open windows side by side to figure out the difference between some of those things

Thanks

ultrasharp is good if you're giving presentations... its just that some people think a screen looks horrible if its not at native resolution, and the native resolution of the UXGAs makes everything too small to see for most people

I agree. At native resolutions, XGA is too large and UXGA is too small ... SXGA is just right, a 15.0" SXGA LCD display is equal to a 19" FD Trinitron running at 1280x1024 IMHO.
