access group (grad) and sallie mae (undergrad). If have all loans from one lender, then you can only consolidate with that lender. If you have different companies, you can consolidate with a third party, not just those lenders.

Good to know, thanks for the info axelfox. Do you mind if I ask why you chose Access Group over all the other lenders for your graduate loans, and if you would have chosen Sallie Mae for them had you not already borrowed from them for undergrad?

Nice, seems Sallie Mae is a pretty popular choice. Unfortunately it wasn't an option offered to me... do you know what benefits/perks come along with borrowing from them? Do they offer any of the loan account credit, interest rate reduction, etc. bonuses like some of the other ones listed above do?

Did you get the Federal loans from any particular lender? Do mind if I ask why you chose to go with Citibank for the remainder of the funds?

Uhh, Federal loans are from the government directly. Citibank was the alternative lender my school worked with.

Took all my loans from Sallie Mae. Why? Because they gave me free money at the time.

i took out stafford when i was an undergrad and i chose citibank. i called up and ask what's the difference between lenders... and she flat out told me that there is not much of a difference. just pick one with the perks that you think are nice and you're comfortable dealing with them. good luck.

funny you should post this now.

i just applied for my loan for law school this fall. I chose CitiAssist (Citibank student loans). i talked to the financial aid office at my school and was told that if i was eligible for loans from citibank that i should choose them as my lender.

im sorry as i can't comment on why citibank is better than other lenders. i just went with the advice of the financial aid office - maybe you could do the same?

what is your graduate school plans? i haven't been on the forums in a bit (on vacation). hope your doing something you enjoy!

I'm going to have to take out some loans eventually to graduate. What does the government or banks look for in giving you a loan? And where are the interest rates at for school loans?

I got some from my institutions at no or lower interest. the rest subsidized through UNIPAC and Sallie Mae. Sallie Mae took months to process my checks one time, and actually "turned me in" to the Califronia Student Aid Commission :| So they are obviously crap in my book. I did get it worked out, since it was their fault, but it took a lot of time and they treated me like sh!t during it.

maxed out federal loans, covered the rest with a citibank loan. went with them because they seemed to have pretty low interest rates (prime - 0.125)
