For the average Joe

Hi everyone,

I'm new here but have been reading in this forum for a while now.
My computer broke down and it's very old. So right now i need ti build a computer that will last me a couple of years. I am the playing type but i don'T want the latest hardware.
I have a budget of 1200$ CAN I need some pointers on building a computer not to costy but efficient enough. I was thinking about this:

AMD64 3000+ S939
Asus A8N-E mobo
Raidmax Scorpio #868 [420W]
Corsair 1024Mb DDR [400] TWINX1024-3200C2
ATI Radeon X600XT 128Mb [PCI-Express]
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120Gb 7200RPM [S-ATA]

I would like to know if this is good and at the same time get some pointers.

Looks good, I do have a few suggestions

1. The case/ps combo is usually not a good idea, especially with raidmax they use the cheapo Powermax PS's. If you do any overclocking, which you probably will that PS will not handle it. The PS is the most important part in any system. I would suggest a quality single rail 450-550w model from Antec, Enermax, Seasonic, OCZ, PC Cooling, etc... If you want a combined case/ps combo look at the Antec combos. I would venture to say 75% of the problems reported here are PS related.

2. Save money on the ram, get the Corsair value ram for less than $100 for 1gb, overclocking ram on A64's provide no real performance increase.

Everything else looks good.

Hmm so i could keep the case but get a different ps, say an antec true power or smartpower?

antec has quality powersupplys. i would also try to put some more money into the graphics card.

umm, stuff like this is usually posted in general hardware.

anyway, I would change the Case, psu, video card, and ram.

an antec sonta would suit you pefectly, $80 and it comes with a good case and psu.

I would et the 6600gt for video card if you can stretch a little

overclocking ram makes no diff get corsair VS for 80 dollars a gig

For the case and psu i think your right it could be perfect.

I think i will adopted the Value Select, hoping that it will bve compatible the the mobo
