I know that this info was posted earlier, but it's actually available for download now, and I didn't see it posted recently, so here it is. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500adwn.htm

Firmware Upgrade 1.0f
This new firmware will allow your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD+R media as well as improve the DVD-ROM reading performance with DVD recordable/rewritable media.

dude, wrong forum or not, thanks for the info--i probably wouldn't have looked for it if i hadn't seen it here.... i think it actually makes sense to post it here b/c a lot of ppl don't check other forums. besides, a lot of us jumped in on one of the good deals on this drive that was posted here, so i know a lot of ppl reading this would find it useful. thanks again!

Seems an aweful lot of trouble to upgrade this drive, gotta change or uninstall a lot of stuff before you can actually upgrade the drive. Think I will do it after my finals :p

I wasn't able to run the utility initially. I had to uninstall the Intel AA, but didn't disabled DMA or uninstall any burning apps and it worked.

how many times do you have to say wrong forum?? When it's not. It says free, which seems hot.

I am having alot of trouble installing the new firmware. It seems everytime I try to install it, it reboots my computer. I have tryed everything listed on the sony support site. I even called support and the guy told me I had to call Asus and he had too many customers to talk to and did not have enough time for my call, what BS. Any help would be awesome.
I am running XP sp1.
