For some reason this is really bothering me...

Okay so we had these presentations in class today on word etymology, and one guy decided to do his in Powerpoint (I think), but our English class was full of macs so we took a PC from our Computer Science room to get it running. He always thinks he's some sort of computer guru God type figure that knows everything about computers..While in reality he knows about 5% than the typical GH reader.

So he loads it up, connects it to the projector, loads up his presentation, but there's no sound. I was quietly being joyous, as Mr. genius loudmouth over here was having a computer problem. I figured it was a simple problem that would involve the Device Mananger or that the volume was down in Volume Control or that it was muted..simple stuff here. So he goes and plugs the speakers into all the sound card jacks, turns up the volume, turns it off and on, and keeps on insisisting, "This computer sucks". He goes on like this for about 5-7 minutes and finally does his presentation without the sound.

I so totally wanted to go up there, use some shortcut keys, like Start button + Pause/Break to get into the System properties, hit right, tab, tab, go down to the sound card, and ENABLE the device (I later found that this was indeed the problem). Using only the keyboard would've made it all the more impressive. However I really had to do some work that was due next period and was quite occupied..plus I really didn't want his thing to work :p But damn I soo wanted to get up in front of our whole class, correct the problem he couldn't fix in 7 minutes in about 15 seconds, say, "You're welcome", or "There you go", and walk quietly back to my seat. I did regret not going up there, but I figured I'd forget it about it as soon as it was over..but NOO, 8 hours later and possibly days later I'll probably still think of it. I could've been the guy to correct our little prodigy's problem.

What makes it worse is the guy's actual presentation. He basically had a lot of girl-man type clipart which made all the girls like, "Awwww that's so sweet".

ARG. What a bastard. But why am I so friggin' upset over this??

You should of. :)

I have before. Cept it was a couple teachers trying to fix something in front of the class... and otherwise just problems like 'operating system not found' "I don't know some kid ruined it we need a new computer" when someone just changed the setting in the bios to 'none' for the primary ide..

Then again everyone knew i was the computer guy (read: hacker) who got suspended for 'breaking in' so i wasn't really impressing anyone =\

Oooh and I would've just LOVED to hear him say, "Thanks...(you bastard)" ooh I would've cherished that moment forever.

actually, the main thing he did wrong was not preparing:p For presentations with visual aids that require setup it is best to test and setup before you have to do it:p otherwise you'll end up looking like a jackass like he did:p

You should have just been like "Let me give it a shot." and then checked. If nothing happened just be like "oh well". If you did it right, just say "there you go, simple enough" and sit down
I usually let people make asses of themselves and not bother to help them.

This happens to me every day...

Every loud mouth "computer wiz" that thinks he knows it all. Some kid in my class couldn't something to work with the mouse so he unplugs both the PS/2 mouse and keyboard and concludes that they were plugged into the wrong ports. He said the keyboard was in the mouse port, and vice versa. He then thought he fixed the problem, and then complained that the computers in our school suck and he didn't know why the mouse wasn't working now. I wanted to go up there and tell him to step aside, reboot the machine, then sit back down. PS/2 devices aren't hot swappable buddy! :D

Yeah, there's a lot of people out there that think that they're computer gurus and they really aren't. Like this one guy I know, his computer wasn't working, ended up being a dead power supply. So, I put in a new power supply for him, and he started freaking out. Why, you ask? Because the power supply didn't come with any drivers :)

Gotta love stupidity.

That's funny. It's going to be 2 years from now and you're still going to be dwelling on it asking yourself why you didn't do it. :)
