For some reason, can't go higher than 18.5x multiplier on CrossHair III

My Zalman CNPS9700 fan was going bad, so I decided to try out the Corsair H50 that was on sale at Best Buy. Installed it last night in a Push-Pull configuration, and decided to try to overclock a bit more on my ASUS Crosshair III and Phenom II 965BE which I already had overclocked to 3.6ghz, temps where 33-55 C (idle-full load).

With the H50, I bumped up the multiplier to 18.5x for 3.7ghz. Works great. Temps now are 33-48 C (idle-full load) Prior to this, anything above 3.6 would lock up after a few minutes at full load. No matter what I tried, bumping voltage, tweaking memory timings, etc., I'd have the same result. Definite improvement, so I wanted to go higher.

So, I decided to bump up the multiplier more to 19x with all other settings remaining the same. Settings done in BIOS. Now the system stays at either 3.7ghz or at the idle speed of 800mhz and is stuck at those speeds no matter what load I throw at it. I reboot, it would or might be opposite speed. It kinda has me scratching my head to figure out what's going on.

I do have the Cool n Quiet setting enabled in BIOS, but that never was an issue in the past when testing out overclocks. I don't think I've flashed the BIOS since I've been sitting @ 3.6ghz. I even tried making setting changes in the AMD Fusion Utility. I can see the target speed, but the real speed remains at 3.7 or 800mhz. Wonder if anyone has some suggestions I can try once I get home.

Are you OCing in bios or software?

Try using the Asus software if you haven't already. It might work better than AMDs.

Also, back up your bios settings and reset it to stock. See if that fixes it.

Most times I use the BIOS settings to overclock, but I'll use the software utilities when trying to quickly determine my max OC that starts causing problems.

I recently did a reinstall of Win7, so I'll have to dig out or download the latest ASUS utilities.

Guess I wasn't on the latest BIOS. Updated and now everything is working.

Must have been an issue with Cool n Quiet because after doing some additional reading, I discovered that Cool n Quiet, doesn't work if the multiplier is set higher than 18.5x, so I tweaked my HT ref clcks instead. Running @ 3.8ghz with the same temps @ 3.7ghz. Guess I'll stick with this for a bit and do some stability testing.

Did some more overclocking and got it up to 4.0ghz, however, it would crash with a BSOD after maybe 5-10 mins at full load. Increased voltage to 1.475 which stablized things, but then would crash/reboot when playing a game. I didn't want to go higher with volts, so I started decreasing the overclock.

I settled for 3.9ghz with FSB @ 211mhz, memory @ 1688mhz, HT @ ~1900mhz, and voltage at 1.462. Temps @ full load are 50-52 C. I'll see how it goes.
