Very cool. Learned a few things. So is this the old-school technique that would have been used before finite element analysis?

Very awesome.
I use FEA software at work and it is good to know how they did it in the old days.
I always wondered how they could possibly know stress concentrations in complex shapes without FEA software.
I assumed they did most analysis with physical models.
