Don't you hate it when someone says they want an item for $X and then asks if they can pay with CC-paypal even though you state in your OP you don't accept that. So you relent and allow them pay with CC-paypal and they ask how much it is going to be to ship. Then you go through the trouble of packing it all up, taking it to get weighed and then you price it all out for them. Finally you tell them what it is going to cost total and they start bargaining with you. Not only have you wasted my time packing, weighing, pricing, and communicating with you; you don't want it any more unless I slash my price on it! F-U!
</end rant>

As a buyer, I generally offer to cover the additional fees, and leave it at that.

Dont be such a pushover. Say the price is firm, and dont even start the shipping process until funds are in your possession.

Estimation - I'm bad at estimating weights. I'll be 4 lbs off and have to eat the difference in shipping costs.

I'm willing to negotiate on things, but do it before I jump through hoops for you. Negotiating time is OVER after I've done all the work.

You know why? The buyer never agreed to purchase the item. He asked you to price out shipping. You decided to take the time to get a true cost (not estimation) of price. Since he didn't like the TOTAL price of the item, he has every right to negotiate and/or decline to purchase.

Next time, just estimate the shipping price.

Next time when you sell something INCLUDE shipping in your price.

Problem solved.

I DID give an estimate at first. Then he gave me his shipping info and asked for the total to which I told him I would package it up and then tell him the next day after I got it weighed to which he agreed.

Overestimate if you need to, nothing ridiculous but to make sure you don't eat shipping costs. Include that in your total price. From the sound of it he never "shook hands" with you on the deal, and you decided to go out of your way to get it weighed. A nice gesture but not one that gives you the right to get upset at him for walking away from the deal. I agree that he negotiated too late and that in itself is frustrating, but the rest of it is your own fault.

I don't even bother with the For Sale forum anymore.
I love looking at Craigslist since I can see the product before I buy.
If I need something that bad, I'll buy it brand new.
If its impulse buying, Craigslist FTW !!

Selling, I'll do Ebay.

Also I hate how people post a milion things on 1 thread and keep it up for weeks.
Too much cluttering and it hard to find what you want in those threads.

Agreed, that makes it very simple.

OP - grab dimensions, weigh, and type in info online with whoever you will ship with.

I've sold plenty of things and don't ever have an issue. I give a flat shipping rate for the continental US and either they take it or leave it, I can't do anything for the price on shipping. This price is a little padded and even if I have to eat some costs, I don't care.

In 99% of my sales, I give a price with the product shipped and have it a little padded. If I lose a little on shipping.. well, with the padding, hopefully I made a little extra on the other things.

Yeah, as a seller you can't expect anything, this is just part of the selling process. If you're having a hard time with this, just imagine what retail stores and other online sellers go through ;)

PS- postal scale at nearest dept store or radioshack
I think that may be the way to go if I continue the FS forum stuff. How much are they for something that accepts up to 10 lbs packages?

did they say they would cover the paypal fee?
There was no discussion of paypal fees.

Also I hate how people post a milion things on 1 thread and keep it up for weeks.
Would you prefer 200 threads with 1 thing posted in each? I sure wouldn't, but I agree there are too many threads in that forum to find what you want. It is especially hard with a search engine that doesn't work and google doesn't make it any easier :)

Overestimate if you need to, nothing ridiculous but to make sure you don't eat shipping costs.
I guess I will have to, but damn I'm horrible as estimating weights on things.

Oh well, you learn something new every day and today's lesson is about AT FS. Overestimate shipping to cover you butt just in case, don't go overboard trying to be nice, and most importantly...

Don't let the FS forum people get on your nerves :)

Thanks everyone,

Keep in mind, you would have spent the time packing and weighing it anyway, so you aren't really out much.

That's good advice - one last idea I have is that maybe you can charge $X.XX for shipping and then refund however less it turns out to be. This is a bit complicated and I'd prefer the method with padded prices for shipping, but whatever is easier for you :)

Let's see how can I break this down.

The buyer he is referring to is me.

The sale was for a Celeron 400, heatsink and fan with a ASUS mATX Socket 370 Motherboard motherboard. His for sale had it listed at 17.00, I came back with $10.00.

I asked him to keep everything in tact. and then :

Old Private Message Don Rodriguez can you keep them attached?

What would shipping come out to. N.B. i don't have No-CC paypal, so cover the charges in it!

he comes back with

Old Private Message techfuzz Items: $10
Shipping: $7.70
Paypal CC fees: $0.84
Total: $18.54

Paypal email: xxx@xxx.com

I'll ship after the payment clears. Thanks

Then i realized 18.54 bucks is a lot for what I'm getting, I can probably score a better deal on craigslist/freebies, so I made him a deal and offered him $14, which I saw as fair. He immediately wrote back no thanks, I wrote back good luck and to get in touch if he rethinks it.

I asked you if paypal was discussed and you explicitly said,

There was no discussion of paypal fees.

Good try you get a -infinity for a horrible rant.

Don Rodriguez:
You are correct, you did ask to cover the fees according to your PM. I apologize, I was mistaken. I thought you only asked to pay with a cc-paypal.

if you have a problem with something I do, please address me directly and don't post a thread on it in the future. I think the value of the goods you were selling me were above market value, hence I wasn't willing to pay such a fee for them, such is life, I hate whiners. It was for sale anyway you would have had to package it in the future. and for future reference, just include shipping in your price, makes life much easier... and no additional fees have to be factored in.

kkthxbye

Yes father.

BTW, they were and still are listed as $10 for the combo (mb + cpu + hs/fan), not $17. You're still welcome to purchase them for $10 + shipping if that deal on craigslist falls thru.
