For people who use firefox, why dont you use IE7/8?

Especially with Ad Block, Remove It Permanently, Forecast Fox, Google Toolbar and some other odd extensions added. I also like Opera
but, I can't get the Ad Block feature to do what I want it to. (It is not inituitive as to how to get it to work properly) But Opera does download files much faster than IE or Firefox.

i've heard one of its new features can be used as ad block. even using lists used by firefox plugins and such, but of course its not exactly something they shout about
 
One reason: "Web Developer Toolbar". Just because of that firefox add-on, it makes it impossible to use any other browser when I spend so much time web developing.
 
More secure. I'm sure IE has come far, but even on IE8 systems I still see tons of spyware installed.

Add-ons. If Firefox doesn't have a feature I want, I can add it easily. Flashblock for instance, or a built in music player. Firefox has basically become a platform onto itself, and I'd rather have it all integrated than run multiple apps. (if you really want a good music player plus web browser, get Songbird, it's built on firefox)

Speed. Firefox is so much faster on Javascript heavy webpages it's not even funny. And that's with the official release, the beta 3.5 release is way faster than that even.

Besides, Firefox is open source software and basically the reason any concern over "standards compliance" exists. I'd much rather use one of the top end web browsers that gives me an identical experience on any platform I choose to use, rather than proprietary software that isn't updated with the new features and ideas the web brings about. (opera however, while proprietary, is worlds better than IE in staying on top of worthwhile features, and it's still faster than IE, I keep opera on my thumbdrive so I don't have to use IE at public computers)

This. Adblock is all that keeps me on Firefox. Chrome is so much faster it's ridiculous.

Try the Firefox 3.5 beta. It seems identical to chrome in speed.
 
I'll wait for 3.5 official to come out before I try it. Right now I use Firefox on my desktop and have no intention of switching. But for slower machines like my laptop, I want something very fast and light on resources; Chrome works well for that. If Firefox 3.5 works as fast as Chrome though, I'll be happy to put it on my laptop as well and go back to using Adblock on it.

Chrome is just as in beta as firefox 3.5.
 
Using IE never occurred to me. I just tried to open it now for the first time ever on this windows load and it doesn't even open, 64 or 32. :shrug:
 
Well you must rememeber that Acid3 test does not mean much today. What does is Acid2 and IE8 pass that perfectly. Gigantic move ahead. That Firefox and others are on to Acid3, HTML5 is another matter, for now... IE will catch up eventually but probably not until another css/html battle like there has been regarding Acid2. All that matters are common acknowledged standards, my reason for some genuine IE/MS hate is their ignorance of this - or worse trying to make their own standards. Perhaps still hopeless but used to be worse. Imagine internet 2009 with only IE and MS idea of standards! To avoid that is best reason to use Firefox for sure.

Not on Vista or Windows 7. You benefit from Protected Mode when using Internet Explorer in those environments.

Is silent mode in Vista?

Anyhow, I'm not going to be using IE anyway, Microsoft is going to have to show they can consistently update and maintain the product for years before I'd trust using it. As far as I'm concerned, the only reason IE gets updated at all is due to competition from Firefox, otherwise we'd probably still be on IE6.
And anyway, Internet Explorer still ranks as the worst of the mainstream browsers in almost every aspect, even if it has closed ranks somewhat. I might choose it over Safari, but in my narrow-minded view, Firefox and Opera are the leaders, and Chrome is worth a shot just because it's google.
 
Not as such but you can change it through GUI like shown here http://blogs.msdn.com/tims/arc...2006/09/20/763275.aspx or via a program called TweakUAC http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/ Setting is in any Vista "Tweaking" software. For most that will be enough, if more control is needed look at thread I linked to - I use "elevate.cmd" in front of the startup command to fire up my File Manager to avoid getting stupid prompts asking if I really want to change a file in folders under program files (86) or similar "system" places. Life is too short for those concerns and actually Ive not had UAC enabled since long, but is possible to live with and if IE in protected mode is main purpose then all you have to do is tweak away.

No matter how great UAC is logic of "need" is flawed since it means that everyone on XP is asking for problems. Obviously nonsense. Or compare with those Firefox users suggesting that without crippling javascript you will be infected. Same type of thinking and also nonsense, without touch with real life/internet. UAC is just another layer, not necessarily needed for everyone.
