For people who talk about managers going on power trips...

In another thread I saw someone talk about how managers go on 'power trips' and do less work, etc.

I worked as a laborer and was eventually promoted to manager at a restaurant once. My district manager said 'no watch how many complaints you and [the other girl being promoted] have lodged against them'. And sure enough, people start complaining about the both of us 'oh they're on a power trip' 'oh they don't do as much anymore' etc. Being on a 'power-trip' is usually just a manager doing their job and telling you something you don't like to hear. Everyone LOVES a manager who doesn't crack down...but they get walked all over and their department/restaurant/whatever goes to crap. And yes, managers do less grunt work, but they usually handle the more important work from a business aspect, it's a more valuable work they do. In my case, I got promoted because I was responsible and worked very hard and was always polite. None of these things changed when I became a manager, but everyone started complaining because I had to be firm at time with people, and also didn't have to do 1/2 of the manual labor I did before.

Just thought I'd say all this, since it seems like 95% of the people here complain about their managers being 'idiots' or 'lazy' or 'on a power-trip', and honestly having been in a managment position, the complainants in this case don't sound like they know what they're talking about.

I've never really had a problem with a manager on power trips, but have had incompetent ones.

I would bet that 30% of the people on ATOT actually are in management positions themselves!

Hard to show that your experience as a manager at a restaurant applies to all managers.

Just like workers, there are good and bad managers. I welcome the complaints about management. Anyone who thinks that they know everything is doomed to fail. A good manager will listen to the complaints and address them. Explain why things are the way they are. Bad managers don't know, so they just say "Because I said so".

I agree that most people yell "power trip" when the manager is doing exactly what he/she is supposed to do. It's because they have never been in that position, and also because their former co-worker is now in a position of authority over them.

I once told a former co-worker who was badmouthing me for power tripping this: You can tell if I'm on a power trip this way... do what you are supposed to do and see how I act. If I still give you a hard time, then you can conclude I'm on a power trip.

LOL I wish I had read this back when I was still managing

I used to work for a complete bitch who micro-managed the hell out of everyone. God, I fvcking hated her. She would berate you in front of other employees and was just evil. I swear, if I read in the newspaper today that she died I would smile. That would seriously make my day.

It's funny, because she blamed other people for screwing things up but she really was in over her head in that job. Her idea of working together on a project was doing it herself and then slamming it down on my desk to review.

The day they let me go from that company was one of the happiest days of my professional life. I'm thriving where I'm at now and I've been here for 3.5 years now and my boss pretty much leaves me alone to do my job. I love it.

I'm glad I don't have any managers.

No one is comfortable with one of their peers having power over them at work.

And what about the managers that really don't do much work and really are on a power trip? One of the posts I saw recently dealt with a manager that flipped out over something relatively unimportant and easy to fix. That's an example of a bad manager.

i agree with u on this. most managers are ok. (unlike Opee from Family Guy tho,). in order for a manager to do his job right, he sometimes has to make decisions that aren't very popular. this is then called a "power-trip."

Just because you are a good worker doesn't mean you are a good manager. Not saying you are a bad manager either. It is a two way street. I had a manager who was an amazing tech but a freaking TERRIBLE manager. He had no people skills. People skills don't matter when you are a tech, they are the world when you are a manager.

I've had tons of great managers that "didn't let people walk all over them", infact that usually meant that neither their employees nor their own managers walked all over them. Bad managers usually take one side or the other. Either they always stick up for their employees or they are yes men that do whatever their managers tell them without ever questioning or informing their managers of anything.

Don't you know the theory of the leadership? The least competent people get promoted the highest to prevent the most direct harm. :D
