For older generation cards are older drivers superior to new ones?

I was playing Prey (2006) on my GTX 580 and there were these predictable framespikes and freezes. Predictable as in if you exit the game and load it again these stutters will happen at the exact same place every time. So I assumed that this was a problem with the game itself. But I installed a very old graphics driver just to be sure, and the framespikes actually disappeared.
Holy -recacted- I was not expecting that. I thought the sole reason you were supposed buy an over-expensive Nvidia card was because of the supposedly stable drivers that you can always trust?

Funny how you can reach grand sweeping conclusions from single instances or examples.
