Hipster alert!

I prefer film for technical reasons so I try to avoid gushing like a hipster. "Analog love?"

You get a certain "look" with film that you can't get with digital. That's why Quentin Tarantino uses it exclusively. Plus I think you still get better resolution with 35mm than even 4K UHD.

Now that RED has 8K movie cameras in the works, I think you're finally going to see a superior digital experience at the cinema.

From this story, it sounds like a rare situation. The Chineese theater in Hollywood had to take their 70mm projector out of mothballs for the Interstellar premier. It sounds like Star Wars may get some actual 70mm love.

The Science Museum uses the 70mm all the time to show documentaries and nature stuff. So it's always ready to go for them. I just looked, and there's no info on whether movies will get a 70mm remaster for those or if it'll just be a digital print. Star Wars The Force Awakens is being filmed using IMAX cameras. Many movies get a special remaster for showing on the 70mm projectors but I guess not all. I have to imagine that a movie like Avengers would get the right treatment.

Wow 32,000 watts. That's insane. That's like a bit over 1/3 of what my work place uses, and it's a telecom CO. (In simple terms, a data centre, but for telecommunication equipment)

Heh it's not that much. I have about that available in my garage between the bass amps, guitar amps, power amps for the PA system etc. Do I use all that power? No but when you're doing live music the bigger the amps the less likely you are to top them out and start clipping.

Yeah, all that nasty film grain.

That's why Tarantino uses it. All his films are homages to old pulp serials. Provides a gritty atmosphere. You can do it digitally but filters just don't seem to cut it. Film also has a certain way it reproduces colour that you can't always get with digital.

So I just saw Avengers at my local IMAX and wasn't disappointed. The presentation was in 3D with dual projectors. I do not know if it was the laser projectors but the image was super sharp. The sound was clean and big with deep powerful and tight bass. Overall it was as good as I could expect.

The one thing that stood out to me most was the powerful bass and better stereo separation than the other theater options. The surrounds were clear but maybe just slightly less impactful than the XD theater likely due to the XD theater using more speakers lines across the walls. I think I prefer the IMAX sound though because everything else just sounded better.

you're hearing the infrastructure and engineer's setup more than a difference in format

Wow. People in real life? ...or just people online?

I haven't met many people IRL that are familiar with Plinkett/RedLetterMedia.
