For love....or money....

Between two careers. One position paid quite a bit more then the other, but wasn't exactly something you enjoyed. The other position would be something you really love to do, but the pay barely covers your expensives (you could still save money though if you were really careful). To make this more interesting, you would be stuck in either position for at least 3-5 years.

Which one would you choose?

If you choose money, how much money would you need to make from the "other position" to make it worth your while?

If you choose love, would you wonder what you could of done with that extra money made from that other position?

Since I do not know what kind of salaries people need to survive in wherever you folks live, i can't include speciifc salaries in this post. Please use your own judgement.

edit: this is according to your current situation. If you have kids, then kids are in the picture. If you don't have kids right now, then you don't have kids in the picture yet. etc.

I don't like to think that way. I'm not going to settle until I make a very decent living doing what I love. And thats that.

But that's not what he asked. 😛

I'll live more simply doing something I enjoy over having extra cash and dreading getting up in the morning.

Depends on how much I don't enjoy the high paying job. Do I outright hate it or do I just not like it as much as the other job? Most likely, I'd still take the higher paying job unless I outright hated it.

Love

Think about it. Doing something you enjoy? Or doing something that could potentionally lead to remorse and regret?

I would regret living in a shack than a nice house.

I'd choose the one I liked. I could live comfortably on $20k/yr or so in Seattle, and possibly as low as $15k/yr (as can ANYONE who doesn't have a family to support). If I TRULY hated the "other" career choice, they'd probably have to pay me $60k or more if I was stuck there for 3-5 years. If I didn't mind it, but didn't love it, $40k would be fine....I'd save most of it, then I could go back to the job I liked (or do something else).

it would depend. right now i am 23 and started my career in september. right now i would go for the higher paying job. i can work my a$$ off and save some money. im young, its the time to work hard.

but come a few years down the road when i am married and thinking about children, i would definitely do what i am happier with no questions asked.

Work sucks. Don't pretend you'll like ANY job in the future. Just take hte positon that pays more in relation to the cost of living in that area.

sorry not me.

i would rather watch a movie on my couch at home cuddling with my GF ($0) than go out and drink and party with all my friends ($ a lot).

i would rather do anything with my GF regardless of the cost than do other things because i feel the happiest when i'm with her, even if we are doing nothing. money helps you get things that make you happy, but to me, there is plenty hat i can be happy with and not have to spend any $$ on it.

It was meant to be a humorously obvious answer/statement.
But you just had the fvck it up didn't you 😛

with a job you hate with lots of money, you could enjoy your time at work much more... buy cool stuff, travel to cool places etc.
with a job you love but doesnt pay, you would enjoy most of your time, but miss out on all the other fun stuff

i much prefer the bigger payout.... i dont mind suffering through a few days at work to save up for something im really going to enjoy

stumped me..I really have no idea what I would choose. Right now I have a sucky job at a sucky pay. Will I ever have to choose money or love? I hope so.

Edit: For 10 sucky years🙁

heh yup, i was going to "pick up an M3" this spring but how my mindset has changed since i started this job. now i'm saving about $1k/mo and saving for a downpayment on either a condo or a house, depending when i start to look and everything.

I'm not being naive. I don't expect the world to work for me, and I know this. I'm going to do exactly what I said with hard work and drive, pretty much whatever it takes. And this i've learned is very important to making the real world work for you. I won't accept that fact that I can't be successful doing what I love, (or something related to it).

i'd take the happy fun job.

if i ever felt like i wasn't making enough $ to be happy, i'd slap myself silly and try to be thankful for being alive.
