lets say someone has a t.v. set. lets say its mitsubishi. and lets say they bought it in september of 1998. then lets say that the t.v. set got messed up, on its own accord. its out of warranty, fine, you have no problems paying to fix it. only problem is, no one has the part needed. not even mitsubishi. no one can even get an aftermarket part. no where in the united states. mitsubishi verified this.

so you have a totally dead t.v. set and it just cant get fixed.

someone told me that manafacturers have to carry spares for at least 7 years after the purchase of the t.v. set. otherwise, they have to offer compensation or a similar replacement to the consumer.

does anyone know anything about these things?

Pretty much its up to the manufacturer. IMHO many times they base production on demand. If people are still buying parts they'll keep making them but at some point they'll just stop and whatever stock is left is it.

Not with car:, IIRC, there's a federal mandate that requires manufacterurs to supply parts for their vehicles. I cant remember the specifics, but IIRC it's like 10 or 15 years.

But, we aren't talking about cars. For everything else it's up to the descretion of the manufacturer.

In the auto industry they are mandated to offer parts for 10 years, but I don't think this carries over to the Electronics industry.

Perhaps you should change the thread title to "I need a new TV."

:p I over looked the TV part. I just read the title, and singled out the word mitsubishi and assumed he was talking about cars. I didn't even read the body of the massage. :)

Completely unrelated of course, but my dad got parts from a dealer, sometime in the 80's, for an Allis Chalmers tractor made sometime in the early 30s (hand-crank to start). Significant part also ... main structure holding the front end together ... when it failed, the front of the tractor plowed into the ground!

Yea, was pretty amazing. They had to order it from somewhere, and it took several weeks. But it seemed like a new part, fresh paint and all. The dealer even had service manuals for it, with part numbers and all. He also bought a brand new belly-mount mower for it at one point, that was made specifically for this model tractor. Had a bizarre/complicated belt & pully assembly to get the power to the mower. No PTO shaft or 3pt hitch.
