so for everyone that bought the iphone up until the new one comes out, which seems to be pretty soon, is there a way to upgrade to the new 3G iphone without having to buy an completely new one? i would be willing to pay a small amount to get the 3G, but not another $400.

if not, i was thinking of reading over the 1 year warranty that comes with it and figure out someway to get the phone swapped out. anyone have any ideas?

Unlock your old one (with iLiberty or ZiPhone), and sell it on Ebay. I actually made money from my original purchase when I sold my unlocked 4GB model last month (paid $300 originally, sold for $375 on Ebay) so that I could get an 8GB model.

Even though prices will drop when the 3G version arrives, they will stay higher than you'd guess because iPhones are so expensive outside of the US, and contracts are required for them, and the dollar is fairly weak worldwide. If you are willing to ship internationally, you will still likely be able to come close to break-even on an 8GB iPhone on Ebay even after the 3G version is available.

Check Ebay right now - the "buy it now price" for an unlocked, working, good condition iPhone is ~$425 (there's cheaper ones, but if you read the descriptions they all have problems), and if they are listed for international sale, the price goes up above $450.... for a used iPhone. Even with 3G out there, unless Apple drops the price on the 8GB non-3G substantially, you will likely be able to sell your used iPhone (unlocked) for over $300.

Just wait and get the Sony Xperia X1. The iphone is a dumb down smartphone. Ironic isn't it?

and the Xperia X1 is an OVERPRICED Windows Mobile POS. WINMO is god awful, and the price tag on the X1 is sick, I've seen it's going to be about EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS. For a phone? hahah. All it offers I like is the resolution.

Iphone is better in almost every way, especially considering the X1 won't be out until the end the year. And by the with the SDK in full force iPhone will probably have more software and actually be smarter than the X1, or any WINMO device out there. I have a feeling there will be thousands of iPhone 3rd part apps in no time. I can't wait to see all the legit software for it to start coming, should be interesting to see where iPhone's stand this time next year. It will probably be able to do anything.

Of course you could take Blueychan and spend 800-1000$$$$ on an X1, which you will have to get imported because no provider will carry such a top end phone (think Nokia Nxx phones) and that also means you'll get no 2 year contract discount or nothing.

As your new moderator, I would remind you guys that we are all different individuals with different tastes. One of the the nice things about the phone industry is that there are a lot of phones to choose from, and this is good because it makes following the industry fun and interesting, and we all have lots of choices to match to our individual preferences.

One person's perfect phone is not anothers - my wife can't stand my iPhone. To her, it's expensive, confusing and isn't particularly good as a cell phone (although she thinks the whole Google maps thing is neat). She wouldn't take mine if I gave it to her - and loves her Motorola RAZR. Go figure.

To each their own... if there one was phone to rule them all, it would make talking about them a lot less interesting.
