For DVD players, how important is the Faroudja Chip?

I've heard many people here say they have DVD players with the Faroudja chip. What is the general feeling for those who have seen the results of having this chip vs. not having?

Is it easy to know if a given player has the chip? Looking for any input or models you may want to recommend. THKs.

Keep in mind that a lot of it also depends on your TV. If you have a 19" TV, then you'll never benefit from that processor chip. It's not just DVD players that have the Faroudja processing chip in them. Some projectors have it, plus the Harman/Kardon AVR-7300 receiver also has it.

I think your question will be best answered by heading over to AVS Forum or the Home Theater Forum, though.

completely irrelevant if you don't.
I agree. What tv do you have?

I've got a few different ones - mits diamond 65" - this is where having a good de-interlacer really shines because it will completely preserve a 480p signal with no conversion, etc...so I rely on my DVD player to do the job.

On the DLP it is not as noticible because there is conversion to 720p already - for this a DVD player with DVI digital output at 720p is the way to go. But its not my main set so I haven't messed with it much.

The sony tube TV preserves a 480p signal as well so a good de-interlacer helps there.

-edit- the great thing is you can get really GREAT digital processing for cheap these days without spending 1000 bucks on a DVD player. Even the sub 300 buck ones can be real gems.

Faroudja chips have their strengths and weaknesses, just like any other. It's a great, low cost solution. The Panasonic S97 is a relatively good, relatively inexpensive player with the Faroudja chip.

If you really want good, look for something with the Silicon Optix Realta HQV chip. :)

Depends which Faroudja chip u mean, they have had a couple out within the last year or two...lol

the Denon DVD players have exceptional picture quality and extremely good sound quality around the mid range-high end range models, the cheaper models are still very good, but at that price point most machines are as good as any other brand...but Denon rule the roost for the most part mid-range atm....

edit: do you mean for DCDi? that chip? if so the Denon 2910 and 3910 models have it......
i have seen them in demo room at the hifi shop i use every so often hooked up to both TV and DLP projectors, looks beautiful :)
