Should I do it? I'm thinking of investing in either an nforce2 setup or either a newer p4 mobo. I'm looking to spend around 200$ or so. I can get a 2400xp on the asus deluxe board for aound my budget, but a new p4 chip would easily kill my cash flow.:brokenheart: Would the performance go up? Would the OC potiential go up for the chip(which can easily do 2.6 now)? I've got it on a 845g setup now, the abit BG7. It's a good board, but wondering how the addition of dual channel mem support would affect the performce also? Any adivse would help, but I know Duvie is a master Guru of OCing every thing.
Cheers!!

I doubt ocing performance will go up...many have shown same end ocing whether it was on an i845pe chipset or an GB chipset prior to going to i875 chipset...The DCDDR setup will give you a performance leap but the gains can be minimal to decent....

My gut says sell that 1.8a which is a decent chip and try to get a newer c1 stepping 2.4 or a 2.4 or 2.6c...then couple that with a good abit i875 mobo or possibly an i865 chipset (100-150 range)...This all depends on you already having 2 sticks of ram, cause I know this wouldn't leave cash left over...

If you had to sell that 1.8a for 110-120 range (I am guessing here on current prices) and get a 2.4b c1 stepping oem (multi-vid chip) 150-160 range....+40

Sell old mobo....+40-50 for an i845g

Take that 200 and get an abit i875 mobo and follow thugs and oldfart on setup and you should go to 3ghz easy....

IMO...wait for the prescotts by spending a little for a decent board now....skip these p4c chips right now and go with the cheaper b chips which are nice ocers and can get that ram up in those dual pc3000-3200 range...

Well, Duvie, once again your wealth of knowledge and wisdom leaves me in a state of awe and wonder. Thanks for the advice.
With that said, know anyone interested in buying that setup?
I do have a few sticks of 256mb. They both top out at around 180mhz at aggressive timing, so I think I could carry
them over to the 875 setup. What is the differnence in the 875 and 865? Haven't seem much on that setup. So are you
incouraging the p4 setup or maybe I should go green with an XP-nforce2 setup?

I say go with the intel setup...get the i875 mobo....get the 2.4b c1 stepping chip and run mem 1:1 since 180fsb will be 3.33ghz....and wait for the prescott which I believe should be supported in these i875 or i865 mobos...the prescott ofcourse will have some new features like the 1mb of l2 cache the larger l1 cache and a host of new instructions and HT enhancements.... ]

You do 3.33ghz+ with dual ddr on a i875mobo and I think you will be hard press to beat that with that amd setup...plus you will be setup for the prescott come later or even a c version chip if you want that later with HT and possibly 300fsb and 3.6-3.8ghz aircooled......

so...

Sell mobo...sell 1.8a....apply that money towards the 200.00 and get that abut i875 mobo (feature rich) and try to get a 2.4c if the price and availability is right.....YOu may be able to swing it if the 2.4c is not commmanding too much of a premium...The abit i875 mobo offers negative mem ratios so that ram you have will do fine in any setup you want to run....

On the i865 (springdale) and i875 (canterwood) differences....

I am not totally versed on this so pardon me!!!!

I think the i875 was marketed for the server market and may have a bit more bells and whistles in the SATA channle controllers and lan controllers while the i865 was set for the desktop users...The later because of those reasons will tend to be cheaper...I think the difference in memroy performance and overall performance will be neglible.....

I recommended the i875 by abit cause it is a good price and well reviewd in these forums by top notch members,,,,The i865 mobos are new with relatively few reviews as of now...

Thanks again. I 've been reading online (tomshardware, anand, the Shark) and I hear of things about the abit board, actually all the boards. But this one in particular is sub par. It is certainly cheaper and comes with all kinds of crap. Still not sure weather to wait it out and see if all the bugs get worked out of the bioses of all the boards or what. And I definetly want to go for the 2.4c w/HT that would kick @$$ !

The first generation Prescotts are slated to be socket 478. Second generation Prescotts should be socket 775. Like Duvie says, waiting for the Prescotts is a viable option.
