Optical zoom is better than digital zoom.

Good choice on buying the Canon A70.

I use it all the time and the output seems fine to me. Maybe they're thinking something may be wrong with size ratio ?

All digital zoom does is enlarge the picture to give the effect of zoom. YOU loose quality.

so... if i ever wanted to "zoom in" like mad... it'd be best to just use the optical zoom, and then zoom in with photoshop or whatever and save the enlarged picture? (if i'd want to save it)

btw thanks for the comments

Yep. That's all digital zoom does.

and as far as zooming goes, the farther you zoom, the more shaky the picture will get, and a worse picture.

zoom all the way with optical, then crop it yourself.

well you want to get as close as possible before using any zoom because your lens is fastest at its wide end.

all digital zoom does is take a portion of the image and blow it up. it'd be like taking a 400x300 image and making it 1600x1200.

That's pretty much what digital zoom is... like the zoom you get with photoshop. It doesn't increase the resolution or anything, so you're going to get pixalated (spelling error i'm sure) pictures.

The digital zoom is nothing more than blowing up the image in your photo editor. You know.. When you enlarge the photo to 150%. You're basically taking the optical image and tweaking it digitally.
