Hey all..

My wife and I are going to be in NYC for a few days in a month or so.. We are looking at hotels right now, and we would like to spend around $200-250 a night (max).. Where should we stay?

Also were can I buy Foakleys, Bolexes, and other electronics out of the back of a van? :p

For Foakleys, just go to a busy Subway exit. They'll always be someone selling them closeby. If not, try Chinatown or one of those touristy stores near 42nd street.

the best place for "in-coat-electronics" is near the Statue of Liberty. They know idotic tourists go there so you'll find lots of coats with all sorts of fake goodies inside!

I know for sure there's always a Foakley guy at the Madison and 53rd St E train exit and the A/C/4/5 exit on John St.

Trust me you will see these guy all over the street especially 42nd street. Also don't let them hustle you for a high price. I think the glasses now and day are for $5 and the watches are for $10 (glasses may be ten don't remember). Anyways just hustle down whatever price they give you if they disagree just leave and buy them from the next guy on the same block for the lower price.

They always try to get tourists so don't have your tourist card out. Also DON'T buy anything from the street by a guy that approaches you and looks nervous trying to sell you something saying he just stole it. That is another hustle and said item is FAKE. I don't care whats he selling or if he even has a reciept. Just trust me its fake, I live in NYC and know all the hustles there is.

Edit: For the guy who posted above me ;)

Sweet thanks for the info..

So dont pay more than $10 for either glasses or watches. Like what items do they try to sell you that they stole? Are we talking PDA's or what?

Mostly watches which they say are real, but are just high quality fake (you can tell a lot by the weight of a watch). Sometimes they might have a couple of cameras and show you one so that you can use it and see how it is and when you decide to buy they give you a box full of paperweight just so you think you bought a camera but what you actually bought was a useless box, this can be avoided by checking content. If anybody approaches you with a pda or sorts if it looks good and you tested out said device I say go for it if you know what they go for used and then payed $50 or more less in the street.

Oh one more piece of advice DO NOT buy anything from tourist shops they will overcharge you about 2x the price. If you are unsure what is a tourist shop is just look out for any gift shop downtown especially the ones that have the I  NY tee-shirt. If you must buy from them you can also negotiate price to about half.

I once had to buy from one of these gift shops because thats the only place that carried the camera I wanted and they were charging $1,000 for a camera that cost $500, never the less I got them to sell it to me for $500 flat with no tax by telling them I know how much they go far and then after they wouldn't go lower than $600 so I'm telling them forget it I don't want it. As I was leaving they pulled me back and said ok you can have it for $500.
I was like now we're talking and that next time don't try to hustle me like a tourist:p.

Any more questions on anything feel free to ask.

i bought foakleys for $10. they were okay, but the paint started to peel after awhile. the quality is definitely not as good as the real oakleys, but that's expected. i ended up just buying a real pair, but going for fake ones shouldn't be too bad.

there usually is a guy near times square (east side of the street) by toys r us or so selling them. if not, i'd try chinatown.

lmao, thanks :)

If one of the other teachers had this period free, I'd check with him... he regularly stays in NYC on weekends, and he knows exactly how much to bid on priceline to get which hotels in which locations in NYC and in Toronto. I watched him do it once for Toronto... he said watch this, I'll bid (whatever the amount was) and I'll get (particular hotel)... sure enough, that's what he got.

LOL.

Years back my buddy got approached in Chinatown by some guy who wanted to sell him a brand new camcorder. He negotiated him down and got some kind of camcorder nicely shrink wrapped in its original box. When he opened it, it was full of cabbage. My friend is Korean and that was the most expensive kimchee he ever had.
