Hi, I got a job that's starting soon. I'm going to be moving out there in a few weeks and have been trying to find the best ISP and TV service. So far I see Charter cable and SBC Yahoo DSL / Dish network.

I've read horror stories about both on dslreports.com, so I'm wondering to those of you living out there, which one do you recommend? (or if you use another service, that'd be great too!).

Thank for the help!

Charter is a good all-in-one bundle of services. I've got a bunch of coworkers that have it in that area and they have no complaints.

I've got a bundled service from Cox. It's cheaper than having services from individual providers, and it comes all one bill. Which is nice.

Charter operates the same way. Except they might not bundle the phone service.

Another nice thing about going cable vs. dish is that Cable providers will typical provide local channels in HD while dish services require you to pick it up OTA. Cable services will also rent you HD-DVR tuner/recorders for a very reasonable price.

I had DirecTV for years. Now I've got cable. It's nice being able to get basic cable at any outlet without requiring a receiver.

I don't know much about SBC dish. I have SBC for phone and DSL, and DirecTV. I used to have charter cable and cable modem service. I would definitely steer clear of charter. Also, you can get DSL for $15/mo unless the deal is gone now.

If the SBC dish service is Dish Network, I'm sure it's fine. I really disliked charter for numerous reasons, including having to have a cable box for no reason, the fact that most channels were non-digital and thus fuzzy, and the outrageously inflated prices. I am getting the same service for nearly $20/mo less through DirecTV, including an extra receiver and tivo service.

---Stop here if you don't want to hear a long-winded why I hate charter speech---

The local charter offices are terrible. If you call the central one, it's generally decent. But they often have outages, but won't prorate your bill unless you report it to them and ask them to. And when you call to report it, they have automated messages saying they are already aware of outages so there is no need to report them.

Furthermore, they do a lot of stupid things. I had my service on auto-pay. I told them I wanted my service cancelled as of some date. But what they did was turn off auto pay so that it wouldn't automatically pay the last month's bill. I got the bill and it said it was on auto pay because they had issued it in advance of when I called. It never got auto paid then three months later I get notification that a credit bureau is going after me.

Also, I had a cable modem. When I had it installed the person told me it was MY cable modem and I did not need to return it if I cancelled service. The person I talked to when disconnecting my service said the same thing. But lo and behold, they wanted to charge me for it because I didn't return it.

Add to that at least two defective boxes that it took them 3 visits to diagnose. When I suggested that the box was bad, they said no way the first 2 times.

my SBC DSL has been reliable, only one significant outage for which they dropped the charge for the whole month. Speeds are great, but decent enough for my neffing habits.

thanks, right now i'm leaning toward SBC. Actually I'm not sure if it's DirecTV or DISH, i'll check into it once I get there.
