For anyone that has/used a TN panel

I have set up/used two TN panels, the Acer 2216W and the Samsung 930B(I believe that was the model). Anyway one thing I have noticed about both of them is that the initial contrast setting is HORRIBLE. For instance, the Acer shipped with a factory default contrast setting of 70. In order to get whites/greys that aren't blending into eachother I have to lower this to at least 35ish, probably lower.

I realize factory defaults typically suck as I have been advocating not leaving your TV on its defaults for a while but this is just horribly bad. It's past the point where I would call it "impressive" and to the point where you lose any sort of white detail at all.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I have heard from a few people who have used those models that the same thing happened to them. I dont know if it is a coincidence or just bad manufacturing.

My parents' 22" viewsonic came with great factory color, contrast and brightness. I had to do very little calibration to get decent grays.

I still can't bear to look at it for long though.

i can see this is default with most monitors so they look shiny and contrasty in a brightly lit best-buy/walmart store environment on the shelves. Seriously.

I think mine came with brightness and contrast set to 100%. :D It was burning my eyes!

Yep, I was fumbling for the OSD control settings with my eyes closed. Guesswork got the candelas reduced enough for me to open my eyes and set it properly.

I'm sure they've studied the average person's reactions to LCDs on store shelves, and I bet most people would say the brightest LCD was the better looking one.

Upping contrast past the point where white detail is lost has nothing to do with brightness and is mainly what I am complaining about

Granted it does make the colors brighter...but its rather obvious that its too high when you can't see changes in grey color. For instance the details of the scrolling slider control on the right side of any window can not be seen.

I just purchased a 24" NEC TN for my son's computer, and I'm pretty surprised with how good it is given all I've read about TN panels on this forum. I can see that if you move to the side or up and down, it gets darker, but for the difference in cost I can figure out how to sit directly in front of the thing.

I agree it's not as good as my 3007, or the 2405 I used to have, but I think I'd rather have a 24" TN than a 20" MVA or PVA.

P.S. My brightness came set at 90%!
