First off, see my SIG for a spec of my computer. All of the parts are new except for the Samsung DVD reader

I thought I'd share with everyone the drama that I've been having with my computer. I just finished installing and running everything on my computer about a month ago and everything was running PERFECT. My master HD is the Maxtor SATA 200GB. All of my critical files are stored here, while all of my other misc files are on the Maxtor IDE HD (slave). One day, I tried moving a few mp3s from the IDE drive and that's when I met it for the first time: the dreaded MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION BSOD. I ignored it the first time, rebooted and tried moving the files over again. Nope. It wasn't havin' any of that. Another MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION STOP: 0x0000009C BSOD.

I researched on Google, misc forums, and the microsoft site and got some good leads. The first suggestion was to test all of my hardware. I ran Memtest for my RAM for a good 12 hours and got nothing. Next, I ran PRIME 95 and did an exhaustive test. Everything came back great again. So I knew it wasn't my new AMD proc or PQI RAM.

Next, I took out IDE connection to my Samsung DVD reader rebooted the comp and tried to move more files. The files played for a good 2-3 seconds and I got another MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION and BSOD. Ok, moved onto removing the Lite-On DVD writer. Same result.

I tried formating the IDE drive several times and right when it was about done, it would BSOD me again.

So, I moved onto updating the software on my computer. I have the latest drivers from Nvidia installed and the latest BIOS from ASUS (1007 beta). And updated all of my device drivers. Reboot and moved more files and another BSOD.

Finally, I found the answer to my problem. I removed the nvidia sw ide driver (Which came on the CD that was shipped with my MOBO) and I haven't had a problem since. It seems like the A8N SLI board ( I know for sure the deluxe one; not too sure about the regular A8N SLI) has problems with IDE and Sata HDs.

I hope someone else finds this information useful. I know that many people were having a biatch of a time getting around the MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error on other boards.

Until there is a stable version of the Nvidia SW IDE driver out, I am staying as far away from that as possible. I'll stick with the generic Microsoft one.

I can now live in peace after a week of hell.

There is a problem with the nVidia IDE driver. Whenever I build a system with an nForce chipset, I never install that particular driver. I suggest that others do the same.
