I had one of the best sleeps ever last night while using this: http://www.soundsleeping.com/

I mixed bonfire w/ ocean, and while it may normally take me a good 20-30 minutes to fall asleep, I think I was out within 5 minutes, and woke up as fresh as I can remember being in a long time.

It's great if you just want to sit and read too.

I've been using WhiteNoisePro on my iPad for this.

Lawnmowers and sounds of some home construction going on near my house makes it a little hard to fall asleep during the day, so I use the airplane and crickets profiles to help block out sounds. I like the crickets one particularly because it tricks my mind a little into thinking its night, so its easier to fall asleep.

For PC, I've used Atmosphere Lite in the past for ambient noise. Really good program with a lot of options.
