for all your 5900 and 5950 owners ... rate the sound.

well i have a reference design 5900 ultra and 5950 ultra here.

i would rate their cooling solutions as annoyingly whiny. the 5950 much less of a smooth noise than the 5900.

what do you guys think about this... has cooling gone too far?

I have an eVGA 5900nu and the only time I really notice any noise coming from it is when I turn on the computer. It spins up fast for a couple seconds while the computer posts and back down after. When I'm gaming I'm too busy playing and have my speakers turned up so I haven't noticed. When I'm not gaming I can't hear it.

I'm not running Vantec Tornados or anything, but my computer's nowhere near silent either.

My Antec PP412X power supply is louder than the cooling fans on my Gainward 5900 Ultra/1200XP. If the fans get loud while gaming I can't hear them over my speakers. 🙂

I think MSI had the right idea. A larger diameter slower rotating fan. The smaller the fan, the faster it has to turn to move a certain amount of cfm's required to dissapate enough heat. If you look at the eVGA 5900nu (which I own) , the BFG 5900 (which I also own) and the MSI (which I would rather own) you will see why these cards a louder to softer respectively. eVGA has a single turbine type fan that needs to spin quite fast in 3D mode. The BFG has 2 conventional fans so they can each afford to spin a little slower. The MSI I have heard is one of the quietest solutions for a 5900. Cooling hasn't gone too far, but the GPU's and CPU's today generate way way too much heat.

Ditto

Genx87, didn't you get the eVGA5900 around the same time I did? Or was it someone else.. Anyways, the only time I hear the fan is when I first turn on the power. Its goes full tilt to test the fan is working properly, then it calms down to almost inaudible. Cranks back up again when I start any 3D app. I dont have any extra fans in my rig. Just the PSU, CPU fans are all I have. So I can clearly hear the 5900's fan and it is very loud when at full speed.

my XFX fan is completely silent. then again, i don't think i can even hear anyone in my room talking because of the hardrives and 10 fans going all going at once. 😉

I did get the evga and you are right on a warm reboot the fan spins as fast as it can go and then settles to a point you can not even hear it.

Since I do warm reboots on that machine about once a month it is a non-factor 🙂

i guess i am just anal. my computer has a 120mm fan in the power supply so thats silent, all the case fans are thermistor controlled arcticooling ones and the cpu fan is an arcticcooling controlled by cool and quiet and my asus q-fan thing.

i dunno the 5950 is really annoying, even when its in 2d mode, it makes this weird noise. I tried it with another 5950 and same thing. the 5900 is pretty much liveable. which is odd since it has the smaller fan, and was supposedly louder from reviews.

i also think that prolonged exposure to these noisy fans has made people slowly lose their ability to sense that they were making noise. one of my friends likes loud fans. he goes "well then i know my computer is on"

Tell your friend I have a really loud 80GB hard drive to sell him. 😛

My 5900Ultra was a lot quieter than my 5900NU in 2D mode for some reason.. maybe it doesn't need to spin as fast with the back heatspreader.
5900 is the noisiest thing in my system now I bought a rheobus and made my casefans silent.

I've got the MSI 5900XT and it is inaudible in my system.
The fan is almost 50% larger than most 5900's and it spins slower and is
very quiet.
I've got stock cooling on my P4 and Vantec Stealth fans everywhere, so i don't
want to hear a whining video card! LOL.

🙂

I don't hear anything from my 5900, but it's mostly due to my 90 db loss in my right ear and 105 db loss in the other ear. I guess silence is golden after all.

I hear ya, bpt! I've lost considerable high frequency range in my left ear. Too much time at the shooting range with sub-standard ear protection when I was in the service. 🙁

My old boss lost his hearing the same way when he was serving in the marines as a sniper. I was born with hearing loss so I can appreciate not hearing anything when I don't need to. However, I do wear two digital hearing aids (they work wonders) and I can hear the five 120mm fans running in my case, but just barely. 🙂
