Man i never realized how much Long Islanders and Upstate People pay to commute to the CITY lol.

The Fare Hike is going to suck :-( Luckily my semester is almost over, dont have to commute everyday.

I feel bad for all you MNR and LIRR commuters. Those prices are high and are now even higher. But as far as the subway fare, I feel that my $63 30-day Unlimited subway/bus MetroCard is the best $63 I spend each month. I use the subways so much, that each ride ends up costing me well under $1. I use the subway to go to and from work every day, plus I use it to go to a restaurant during lunch. And often, on my way home, I will make one or two stops that would have cost me an additional fare. Then on weekends, I go all over the city on the subway. I love the subway. I know I'm more enthusiastic about riding the subway than most people, but I really feel the 30-day pass is a great deal. And I'm more than happy to now pay $70 per month. I will also get my first set of TransitCheks in June so that will save me some money in taxes. If any of you are interested in subways like I am, I highly recommed the following website, New York City Subway Resources, and its forum, SubTalk. 😀

I used to buy the 30 day pass, and its a great deal, but I've lost one, and another has just gotten totally damaged. I keep the metrocard in my wallet nice, but its so flimsy it gets messed up like its nothing.

Now I just use the weekly pass. Costs a few more dollars per month, but its worth it cause in case you lose it, its not that bad of a loss.

One thing you can definitely say about the NYC subway though, is that you really really dont need a car to get around in the city. The subway will take you within a few blocks of anything. Having a car in the city is more trouble and hassle than its worth.

But queens is a different story. Buses are so sloooooooooooooow....

What do you do to your card?

Mine gets a lot of abuse and I've never had a problem with it. The cards are actually machine washable (yes, I've unintentionally tested this).

If your card gets messed up, you can talk to a person in the booth and they can get you a replacement

The Bay Area BART is no stranger to problems either. I've found myself wasting 45 minutes at a time while they fix "technical issues" with their trains. It's very frustrating when you have already planned your schedule. But I must say that the BART does haul A$$ when it's going under the Bay....takes less than 5 minutes.

while the Bart is nice, I don't think it is fair to compare a subway system to bart. Bart has a total of what, 30 stations and is probably less than 100 miles (all of this for a metro area that is like a 100 square mile area)?

NYC subway has something like 500 stations and over 500 miles of track for a metro area that is less than half of the bay area (wild guess).

The Bart is much more like MetroNorth or Amtrack than it is a subway system.
