I have a question! I am building a system consisting of the following:

1. Abit IS7
2. Intel P4 2.4C (possibly overclocking in the future)
3. Buffalo 512MB PC3700 DDR
4. WD 80GB HDD
5. WD 20GB HDD
6. Some CD-RW (haven't decided)
7. Possibly a CD or DVD-ROM
8. ATI Radeon 9000 128MB DDR
9. Floppy
10. Antec SLK3700AMB
11. Antec SL350 (SmartPower350W) that came with case

The case came with a 120MM exhaust fan in the back, and room for another 120mm in the front. Since I want my HDDs to run cool, I am going to put a fan there (as an intake). The HDDs sit right in front of this fan, so it should help. Being quiet is my main goal. I am going to CompUSA tomorrow (to pick up a CDRW drive), and I would like to buy the fan there, even if it would be a bit more expensive. I see this one: Epinions on Comp's website. Is this a good fan? Should I just order one from somewhere else? Give me some advice!!

Thanks again, Josh

Ummm, the case he has only supports a 120 mm fan in the front, which is a good thing. I've never heard of the fan you linked to. My recommendation is get a 120 mm fan on-line from newegg, svc, or bestbyte. I've got a ThermalTake 120mm fan from Newegg.com in the front of my SLK3700AMB. You'll pay closer to $20 for a 120 mm fan at compusa, most likely. If they have an Antec fan, especially a "smart" case fan, then pay the extra couple bucks and get one of those if you have to buy one at the store. If you plan on using a rheorbus, then you don't need a "smart" fan. My 2 cents.

I have built a couple of systems using the 3700AMB, to make a very quiet system:

1. Get 2 new 120mm fans (SVC, coolerguys, etc) For like $10-12 each. A lot quieter that the stock fans, or get a fan controller for the stock fan.
2. Stock Hs, if you did not get the P4 yet, save $11 and get the Oem version without the Intel HS and fan and get a SLKxxx or a Zalman CNPS7000A
3. Seagate drives are definately quieter that WD, CompUsa has the 120gb for $59 after rebate
4. Lastly but it will cost you $80(+/-) is to get a much quieter 400+ watt power supply. With an overclocked P4 plus 2 hdd and 2 optical drives you may need more than 350watts anyway

1. I am going to test out the stock Antec fan today, and see if it is quiet enough. My current system is pretty loud, so I have a high tolerance, but for this build, my goal is quietness (with the last build it was looking cool (window case)). Do you recommend any special brands for the 120mm fans? Are the Panaflo 120's quiet (I have *heard* (no pun intended 😀) that the 80mm ones are)?
2. I think I'm gonna give the stock HSF a try first. Just because at this time I really don't have the extra $20~30 (the SLK series are $30-40, minus the $11 saved, is about $20-30) to spend. I don't plan to overclock for a while though.
3. I would buy the HDD, but I already own and use the WD (WD800JB Special Edition 7200RPM 8MB cache). When I get some more $$$ I would like to buy a raptor though.
4. I am using the Antec SL350 in a different case now, and it is quiet enough (for me). Eventually I might replace the fans with Panaflos, but for now it's ok. About the wattage, I decided not to run the 20GB (which I use for linux), because I will just use my existing box as a seperate linux box. Also, I am only going to run 1 optical drive for now (a 52X CDRW), and I'm not going to o/c yet.

Thanks for all your help, Josh
