It depends entirely on which school you go to. Some schools require that you live on campus for at least your first year, and most of those don't allow you to own a car.

You can own as many cars as you want. But like the other posters have mentioned, many colleges won't let first-year students park on campus unless they're commuting.

How can a college dictate your financial choices beyond tuition? I wouldn't attend a school that said I couldn't own a car on their campus, period.

I had a car my first year and I lived in the dorms. They had a parking lot a block away, but I never really used my car except to go home. Of course the University I go to is in the middle of Iowa so if you're in a big city, there might not be enough room.

Completely depends on the college and its location. My school is on the side of a hill surrounded by a city, so there is absolutely no room for parking. Hence why freshmen are not allowed to have cars.

If the school is in an urban area, you probably won't be able to get parking as a frosh (and certainly not anything near the dorms) - if it's a suburban or rural school, it's probably not a problem.

I wouldn't do it, especially if you're living in the dorms. You'll just end up being the guy with the car that everyone will use for a ride. I'd do without it at least your first year. It's a lot more fun that way.

Yes...but in some schools (I think mostly larger ones) they sometimes don't let freshmen have parking spaces. However, you can find a parking space outside of campus somewhere.

Easy. They just make a rule and then say that anyone not interested in abiding by it should enroll elsewhere and don't let the door hit you on the a$$ as you leave. Most schools have no shortage of applicants so they get to set things up however they want.

The university I went to built new dorms that didn't fill completely up, so they made a rule that, unless you were married, you had to live in a dorm until age 26! They're still around and thriving many years later.

I'm going to be a third year and still don't have one. First year, a car isn't necessary. Second year I still think its optional. Now it is getting to the point where having one could be REALLLLLY useful but I can't get that through my parent's skull. SO I figure I'll get a car when I graduate.

Then again I live entirely on campus

it was a no at my college unless you made an appeal to the guy in charge of all the residence halls. they would make exceptions for people with out of town jobs and stuff like that.

the big reason behind it was the shortage on overall parking spots. it's hard enough for the upperclassmen with parking passes to find legit parking in the lots without throwing 3000 freshmen into the mix.

My particular college says you have to be in the dorms if you are a full time student with less than junior status. Everyone hates the situation.
