For all those that rip on wrestling

For all those that rip on wrestling, you don't really understand the people involved in the entertainment sport or why an average teenager watches pro wrestling. First off, let me talk about the athletes involved in wrestling.

Some of the men and women in the wrestling business are stand up people. Yes, there are people who are just idiotic involved in wrestling, but the majority are smart and civilized. At a recent autograph signing, Chris Jericho exhibited how a wrestler was really a stand up gentleman. A father was trying to lift his son who was confined to a wheel chair up to a stage and had a hard time doing so. Chris jericho stopped the autograph signing for a moment and went over to the father and helped him lift his son onto the stage. For the rest of the signing, Chris let that wheel chair confined child sit next to him and gave him autographed shirts and other items. I don't know how many other pro athletes who make sh!tloads of money a year go out of their way to help a paralyzed child.

The Rock, who is a very talented actor and wrestler, recently won an award from the Make a Wish foundation for visiting the most sick/paralyzed children in one year. At least fame didn't go to his head. The Rock, who is arguably the WWF's most popular wrestler, only makes 6 million a year. Alex Rodriguez, that stuck up f*ck, now makes around 25 million a year. How much will he donate to charity? Probably not a lot. Obviously, he thinks he's all that and deserves that much money. Mike Hampton just signed a 122 million dollar contract with a 20 million signing bonus. He's going to give one million to charity. Wow, what a nice guy. With money like that, he should give at least 75 million to charity.

And for those that think that all wrestlers are stupid, let's take a look at Mick Foley. He was crazy for doing some absurd stunts, but he wrote a book himself that managed to stay on the NY Times bestseller list for a few months. Wow, he must be really stupid to write a good book.

And what about those wrestlers who started a voting initive during the 2000 presidential campaign? They must be horrendously stupid for trying to get young adults to vote in the next election.

Finally, teenagers watch wrestling because of the very fine athletic prowess required to perform in the ring. Many wrestlers are extremely gifted at what they do, and many have a charisma which can bring a crowd to their feet with just a raise of the eyebrow.

Note that I haven't mentioned Vince McMahon in this article. Although I think he is a great advertiser, I don't think his morals are on par with some of the wrestlers he employs.

If you post in this thread, please keep the posts civil.

SCA, While I am not a fan of PW, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of the members of Pro wrestling and I agree with what you say. Especially Mick Foley, one of the most dedicated family men I have ever met.

Although I disagree with 1 of you points, yes these athletes do make more money in a year than most of us will in a lifetime, whose to say how much they should donate to charity, if any. While I do agree that charity is a worthy cause, you do have to remember that most of these men will only last abou 5-10 years max in this "sport" due to the physical demands of the sport. And also at that level of income, Uncle Sam takes about50% of what they make. They really do need to plan for their future and their family's future.

These men are great Atheletes, they have to be to pull the moves and stunts they perform.

Just my $0.02

I have little against pro wrestling, and find it entertaining, but I have problems with some of the people that watch it religiously and want to know what happens every week as if it's real. IMHO, it's a soap opera with violence, and little more, and that's why I find people who watch it every week and follow the storylines a little humourous.

my 2 cents, i cant stand wrestling, in my town the "loyal" fans of wrestling are mostly (not all ofcourse) big ass hicks. I have never been to a match or watched a complete show, but my roomie went to wrestlemania, he said it was bad ass, quote "man it was the sh[/b]it, tons of drunk ass people just screaming and making asses out of themselves." now theres your fan base.

now tell me this, why do you call wreslting a sport? in how many sports do you see advocates of violence, running over people, hitting people with latters (latter match? wtf?) lesbianins, cheating wives, cheating husbands, betrayal, etc etc etc etc.

oh please, turn off the damn tv and stop watching that crap. and about real athletes i think you should take a look at some of the mexican wrestlers they have great skills and very acrobatic, and youll rarely see a guy who is 6'4" and 300 lbs, now tell me, do you call a guy who is that big and can pick up people by the neck talented?

Their are few other athlets that can match up to pro wrestlers in the endurance department. I'd like to see anyone try to throw people around and get thrown around themselves for 15 mins and still be able to walk after it.

first of all wrestling is not a sport. Correction: pro-wrestling is not a sport. it's acting, and not very good either.

Second, you don't have to be smart to be a best selling book. It'll sell because of who wrote it not what they wrote.

third: "teenagers watch wrestling because of the very fine athletic prowess required to perform in the ring" Bullsh!t they watch it for the violence.

fourth:i seriously doubt whether the get out to vote campaign was their idea. Even if it were, it's not like they invented the concept and besides those have little effect on voting rates.

Lastly, i gotta wonder about any "sport" that involve men in spandex grabbing each other.

Football involves men tackling other men and is more homosexual than wrestling, but at least it isn't staged. I'd rather watch football than wrestling because at least I could respect football.

However, now that I think about it, wrestlers are half naked and jumping on and fighting hand to hand with each other.

In light of these facts, I'm not sure which is more homosexual. I think I'll stick with baseball, a non-contact sport.

First, pro wrestling is not fake. I can't recall when pro wrestling claimed with a straight face to be genuine. Pro wrestlers are athletes in the same way bodybuilders are athletes. I can appreciate the dedication required to obtain those bodies and hone those moves, and I suppose there is competition among wrestlers to be chosen by the promoters as the next champion or villain, but the show does not involve competition. The victor is known beforehand, and the bout is well-scripted.

Of course, pure sport at the highest levels is increasingly difficult to find. Traditional pro sports leagues such as MLB, the NFL, the NHL and the NBA all suffer from discrepancies in team spending, so that many games are skewed in one team's favour. However, unless you believe in conspiracy theories, there is no sure winner in these leagues. Nobody has instructed one of the participants to lose. One probably has to look to amateur sport to find "pure" sport nowadays.

If you can look past all this, I'm sure pro wrestling could be entertaining in the same way FOX thinks car crashes are entertaining. I mean, at least YOU don't know the outcome for sure until the match is over. And perhaps that's enough for some. Well, that and large men screaming threats at one-another.

So no, I don't "rip on wrestling" - it's legitimate entertainment. It isn't sport, but I'll entertain the notion that the wrestlers are athletes. Now, about the comment about "The Rock" being an accomplished actor. I'll believe that when Vince McMahon decides to pool all this artistic talent and open each wrestling event with some Shakespearean theatre. "The Rock" and "Chyna" - now THAT would be some production of "Taming of the Shrew"!

Regards,
Craig

Sure wrestling is fake in that the outcomes are predetermined. But I would like to see anyone here fall 20 feet onto an announcers table a la Mick Foley.

In Karate they teach you how to fall so you take a minimal amount of damage. Whether or not this helps from 20 feet I don't know, but even so, unless you fall head first you're probably not going to get seriously hurt. Wrestlers get paid to take a little pain and to act. If a wrestler messes up a fake punch or doesn't fall on someone correctly, then someone could get hurt, that's one of the minor downsides to their job. But until they stop pre-determining winners and stop turning wrestling into a storyline akin to a sitcom, it's still fake, and crap.

First of all, wrestling is NOT a sport.

Second...

<< The Rock ... is a very talented actor >>

FOFL 😀

(by the way, that's Falling..on the floor laughing. It's not a typo. 😉)
