For a home pc...

If you have to buy one anyway go with XP. (Like amdskip said, if you have the power) If you have 98SE think about updating to XP if you have the $$.

Well, at Newegg, WinXP Home is $1 cheaper than Win98se. You'll have to deal with registering your copy (which I hear is a pain) but why not go with the newest Operating System if you can? Win98 is a few years old and won't be supported for very long...

Here's another vote for Windows XP Home Edition!!! Just make sure you "do your homework" to MAKE SURE ALL of your current hardware AND device drivers AND the apps you want to run (particularly utilities) are WinXP compatible.

🙂

I'm throwing my vote in for Windows 2000. Stability + no Product Activation = GOOD

There's just no compelling reason for me to upgrade from Win2K to XP.

win XP just makes use in a home enviroment the safest and easiest of the three. I currently run XP Pro and 2000 and XP is definitely easier to fix and maneuver through than 2000. As for 98, that will be legacy soon so unless you are nostalgic about it I say forget it.

Well, 2k is $140 and XP is only $90. Is sidestepping an activation code really worth $50? I run XP Pro Corp (I got it from work, open licensing) and I never had to mess with the activation, so I don't know. It might be, I heard it's a real pain, but I'm tight with money (especially with software).

How to activate XP in 2 easy steps:

Have some way of connecting to internet (cable/dsl/dial-up)
Click on Activate. The computer will connect via internet, or dial it's own toll-free number and activate. It will take about a minute.

Or, if you have no way of connecting to the internet (3 slightly more boring steps):

Write down a code given to you by the computer, 8 blocks of 6 characters, plus 1 block of 2 at the end.
Call the toll-free number and follow the instructions.
Type the confirmation code they give you back into the computer.

Congratulations, you have just activated Windows XP. See, now that wasn't too difficult was it!? 😉
