For a first time trader looking for a few individual stocks, which brokerage would you use?

Sharebuilder is good for new investors. I like Ameritrade better myself, though.

some companies let you buy directly. check out investor relations site at each company web site.

You might want to try Advanced Search using "stock" and "broker" if you don't get enough responses in this thread, since this question comes up pretty often.

Scottrade is decent for just starting out.

Thinkorswim has the best software and a touch of humor/wit. Excellent broker, cheap commissions (min balance $3500).

I searched for "brokerage," came up with very little. I'll search further...

Scottrade.

I've used TDWaterhouse, Morgan Stanley, PaineWebber, Fidelity. Of all the small investor brokerage houses, I've been happiest with Scottrade. They don't nickel and dime you to death for inactivity fees, etc. and a minimal startup balance of I believe $500.
