On a Thinkpad X1 Carbon, I did a Lenovo System Update.

One of the updates included the BIOS. The system shutdown and rebooted.

The message on the bottom left of the reboot splash screen has been:

"Flashing embedded controller. Do not power off."

for the past 8 hours.

Any suggestions?

Lenovo support won't tell you anything besides "reboot it." When flashing the BIOS on any computing device there is always the very slim possibility that a brownout, power surge or noise on the AC line will mess up the process. That's why it's highly-advised to always at least be plugged into a filtered powerstrip or preferably, a voltage-regulating UPS when doing so.

POSSIBLY, some AC weirdness of some kind happened while you were flashing the BIOS.
POSSIBLY, you were plugged into a fantastic UPS...or not.
POSSIBLY, you just have a bum laptop.
POSSIBLY, the flash completed fine but the reboot just didn't happen.

Only one way to tell. Hold the power button and turn it off. Wait a minute. Reboot and see.
