I let my 1.3ghz athlon just ramp like a bitch the other day. Whitepapers from AMD indicate device failure above 95C. So I just took my fan off my FOP38 HS and let it ramp...up to 83C in a 80C room where it stabilized. I was pretty impressed that it was only 3C above room temp. Anyway, I let it crunch for 1/2 hour like that...watching it closely. No hickups at all. If you guys can get this HS, you're guaranteed not to fry anything even if the fan stops. it ROCKS!!!!

Cheers

I think you're badly mistaken about your room temperature, compadre. Typical room temperature is around 25C to 30C. You also have a shaky grip on how CPU temperature is measured. The 83C that you saw doesn't mean the CPU was at 83C... the CPU itself was probably at closer to 110C to 120C when you saw your socket thermistor reading of 83C. Big difference there. I don't recommend testing your luck like that again!

I'm still impressed that it was only 3 degrees Fahrenheit above room temperature with no fan on it. Was there any other airflow hitting it from a case fan or a breeze or fan in the room?

Actually, I was pretty happy with my FOP heatsinks when I used them. Seems that every time I've gone to a "better" heatsink, I really haven't seen significantly better performance. Even heatsinks like an larger Coolermaster, or an Alpha PAL6035, and now an AX7, they cool alright, and probably better than a FOP would with the 1.2GHz I'm running, but given how relatively plain the Globalwin line is, they certainly work well. I even used an old Globalwin made for SuperSocket7 boards on my first Duron 600 and it worked perfectly well (and was a damn sight easier to clip on).

or instead of letting your chip go to 80C strap on a low flow/near silent 60mm fan..
