All you FOP38 owners I need your advice.

I'm in the market for a new HSF and I was thinking about the FOP38. I've read it's a loud mother. If it is any one consider using DynaMat on there case?

I don't own one, but I know people who have the FOP32-1, and that is only 35 dB, while the FOP32-1 is 46 dB. When the dB incrases by 10 points, the intensity goes up by ten. However the human ear percieves it as twice as loud. So basically you would have a fan that is twice as loud :). Get a Taisol or a Fop32-1.

I own one of the FOP 38's. They are very noisy! I have mounted the "Black" Delta-fan from the FOP 38 on a HedgeHog cooler and I think it's good...
It is very loud, but the fan kicks @ss!

IMHO, the FOP-38 is not fit to be in the same room with human beings. I built a computer with it, and I have to shove it in the closet to muffle the fan. Its loud and scary. Fingers beware!

i agree w/ the finger thing.... i tried that last night.

after getting FOP38... i'm in the market again for a cpu fan.

go for the FEP32... bigger heatsink but smaller fan... less noise.

Well I got the FOP38 and it is loud. So loud, that you develop a tic, start to stammer, your hair becomes grey and you end up going to a locked ward with other less psychiatrically challanged patients.

I heard the FOP38 and not only is it loud, it has a high pitch whine to it. So it is even more annoying. The FOP32-1 is good for me.

I have a FOP38 with the Delta fan. Sound gets drowned out by the rest of the fans in the case :). Just a bit high pitched, but does a terrific job

I have an fop38 but haven't tried it yet. Would it be alright if I just pluged it into my empty sx1030b without a motherboard or anything to see how loud it is?

another thing you can do for same cooling efficiency at less noise is get like the FOP32...same size heatsink as 38...then mount an 80mm fan on top using one of those 80mm-60mm fan converter thingys, like the sunon 43cfm which puts out same dB as the ystech from the FOP32, yet bests the black label delta in output (43v38)

I just bought a fop 38 they are way too damn loud. However, I have found a couple of things that remedy some of the above complaints. The whine seems to be generated by turbulence when objects are near the fan blades. Therefore if you do not install the fan guard it is quieter. Putting a spacer between the fan and the heatsink helps. And finally use a dremel to grind away as much of the struts on the fan as possible and grind away as much of the side walls of the surrounding plastic as possible. I actually cut away the entire top of the fan casing which of course means that I can only use the fan blowing air toward the heatsink. With these mods the high pitched whine was eliminated and my temps fell by ~2 celcius as measured by the motherboard thermistor which we know is not that accurate.

I read there is a Vantec HSF model very comparable to the FOP 38. They have the same size fan, though, I think... I'm looking for an HSF too.. anyone know about the noiselevel on the Vantec (it's also usually $5 or so cheaper than the 38)..

Another way to reduce the noise is by removing the black label from the Delta fan and applying several drops of sewing machine oil into the hole. This seems to help with the vibration and high pitch whining.
