Are you trying to overclock?

The FOP32 WILL NOT WORK on a Socket-A processor. Only the FOP32-1 will.

Hmm, I don't know where the name FOP38-7K popped up from, on GlobalWin's site it's called the FOP32-1. And it's the Chrome Orb, not the Platinum Orb. ;)

1. I'd avoid the Orb, Gorb, Corb, Porb or WhateverOrb it is now, due to past problems with the Thermaltake's and the Socket-A CPU's.

2. There have been good reports on the GlobalWIN FOP32 and the FOP32-1. However, the FOP32-1 comes with the proper clips for a Socket-A connector, while the FOP32 doesn't. So some people have resorted to straightening the clips of the FOP32 with a small pliers to make them fit. I'm not recommending this, just reporting.

3. The FOP38 is new and is supposed to be for both Socket-370 and Socket-A (AMD Socket-462), which makes it more versatile. Their site says it is "good for overclocking," but I haven't seen any tests. It has a faster and noisier fan than the FOP32.

--------------

Finally, whatever you get, just don't put too much pressure on the chip when clipping on the HSF - that's how they get broke.

The FOp32-7K is on Tweaktown's guide to Socket A coolers. That is where I got that reference from.

I went to Coolerguys.com and ordered an Alpha PAL6035. They have them in stock. I think that would be a sweet one to get, albeit at a heightened price.

I don't know about Thermaltakes previous attempts on making a Socket462 Golden Orb, but I can attest that their Socket370 Golden Orb is a real pain to install. The screw on retention mechanism just sucks.

However, I've just installed the new Chrome Orbs on a Duron 700 today, and it comes with a more conventional clip retention device which is much easier to put on. I'd say its easier than the retail intel HSF retention mechanisms.

In light of that, I'd recommend the Chrome Orb if your budget isn't that high, but would still like decent cooling. However, if you have a KT7, you're out of luck with the Chrome Orb since the capacitors will get in the way. It works on the A7V though.

Acutally Coolerguys' price for PAL6035 is not so bad, they included a fan grill.

Thanks alot for answering my question..

Think i might just go with the fop32-1 because dont really want to be pissed of by a noisey fan which i heard the fop38 is..

Thanks !

what is the difference between
1. Globalwin FOP32-1++ 38CFM
2. GlobalWin FOP38-1 (AKA FOP32++)
3. GlobalWin FOP32-1
4. GlobalWin FOP32-1 27CFM
5. GlobalWin CPM-32

really which is goog for a Duron / abit kt7.

From what I've read the noise problem comes from the 38CFM Delta Fan on the FOP32 models. It's probably a noisy fan on anything Alpha or Globabl win. Inflow Direct sells them with sunon 23 cfm fans which would be quieter yet, but with low noise and less cfm there is less agressive cooling. So take your pick quieter (less cool) or noisier (more cool). I would say something inbetween like the 27 CFM fan would be a compromise. I believe though that the Alpha is the cooler king. I had the Gold Orb and it cracked some of the epoxy off the die, but I have one of the new Chrome Orbs with the square bottom that lays on the rubber pads on the Duron. It's easy to put on and I push the Duron 700@900 with 36c idle and 39c stressed. For $16 vs $25-30 for Global or Alpha you can't go wrong.

P.S. Don't forget the Arctic Silver thermal paste adds $15 more. 2-3c cooler might get you to go faster.
