Was looking up all the "things" a football referee has (like if they had more than one beanbag). Good stuff in there and explains the use of their hat. Also explains who is responsible for certain calls and where they stand.

Referee - by the QB, watches the QB and is the "head referee", you'll recognize him by the white hat
Umpire - this is the guy you see getting nailed sometimes. He stands behind the linebackers and defensive line.
Head Linesman - at line of scrimage, calls line type of calls (o sides, etc), spots ball.
Line Judge - same
Field Judge - behind secondary
Side Judge - similar to field judge
Back Judge - deep behind secondary. You see him make pass interferrence calls on long balls.

This is also very interesting..

" In 2006, the NFL completely redesigned shirts, going to a sleeker-looking uniform which, however, no longer identifies a given official's position from the front.

Of more intersting note from the wiki is NFL referees are by contract only allowing them to simply not renue a refs contract if they don't like it.

Out of all officials I think football ones take the most scrutiny because every single play/spot/call can be viewed over and over again.
