In football, if the player is released is his team responsible for players salary? I know they're responsible for his signing bonus which also counts against the cap. But what about base salary? If the team still has to pay base salary, why do players put such importance on signing bonus?

Actually I don't think they do have to pay the base salary do they? But usually their is such a large signing bonus that a player won't just get released.

yup. That's why its called a contract.

Well, why is such importance placed on signing bonus? If player gets the whole amount of the contract, it doesn't matter how much of it is signing bonus and how much is base salary.

Because they like to get money upfront. Wouldn't you? there's a lot in a contract, bonuses, incentives, etc.

Signing bonuses are usually prorated over the length of the contract.

Football is unique from Baseball and Basketball in that players have to make the team e3very year to get their guaranteed money.

I did a little research after the Keyshawn incident.
