Ahh yes, all the big badasses here are too tough for a little wimp like that. I wonder how many of you here could actualy be hit without protective gear by two huge linebackers and still feel the same way? Sad thing is that maybe there are one of two of you out there that could take a hit like that. The rest would fold like a deck of cards, but everyone TALKS like a big badass from behind a keyboard.

Like always we don't know the whole story. If they guy didn't think he was going to be hit, and wasn't supposed to be, obviously he wouldn't be trying to protect himself. And if he wasn't wearing any pads, two people running at full speed, thats going to hurt, its going to hurt ALOT. That would be like a small car(think ford festiva) hitting you.

I also heard that when the coach had his players do this to the second guy he told the 4 linemen "explicitly" not to hit the guy.

I Don't know all the details, but, I can gather that neither do u all. D-I college football is no joke...unless you've played it, you wouldn't know. I'm not trying to stick up for this kid, but there are certain things that go on that none of you would know about ...things that no person should have to endure, but you do inorder to play...some people just don't have the mental discipline to hack it...

I played in Hich School( which can't compare to the speed and pressure to div 1 football ) and this type of thing was a pretty common thing. If you missed blocks too often( I was an offensive and Defensive tackle ) you could be punished in a similar manner. The guy should not be ashamed for leaving the team, I'm sure he DID encounter some physical and emotional anguish over the incident. Like it's been said, some people would be able to handle somthing like that better than others. I live in Atlanta and the press( I don't know how reliable ANY of their info is ) is ALL over this thing. Today at this board was the first I have heard of 2 of the 4 guys NOT hitting him. When it was reported on 750 AM ( a pretty reliable source ) they were saying he was hit by All 4 and he had no gear on. The part that bothers me is this thing with his mother. What is she thinking? Her son has probably played ball since he was like 10 years old and she should KNOW that that type of thing is normal and going to happen. Now granted they would usually being wearing their pads when it happens but that would probably take away from the effect considering their level of play( may not hurt enough to be effective?!? ). The saddest part of this whole thing is that she will probably be able to sue the school and win and we will have ALL kinds of new rules put into college football and change the game drastically.

what a bunch of dumb a$$es we got here...

If the guy was wearing full gear than fine...that's part of practice
(even if having 4 guys rush you is a little over the top..but so be it)

The guy was not protected with any pads!!

The only reason his mom is suing is because she realizes that that's the only way her son will ever make money in life. And if he can't be in the NFL, he won't be able to buy his mom a new house and car working at the local bowling alley.

The guy is P-whipped momma's boy! Pads or no pads, he should have protected himself.

I've gotten my butt kicked many a times playing sports. If you can't handle that, you need to do something else, like ballet or something. I'm not some big macho tough guy, I just know that in sports (especially football) you're gonna get roughed up.

As for the pads/no pads thing, rugby players do just fine. It's simply a matter of the guy being too much of a wimp, and having to call his mommy for help. Puuuuuhlease.

i bet the majority of you guys never even played organized football.

I played Div 1 in highschool. Tackling someone without pads is BS.

And don't give me that rugby crap...he was a american football player not a rugby player!!!

tagej, could you stand to be hit by even ONE collage line-backer? and without protective gear on? If the answer is no then are you in a position to bad-mouth someone for something YOU can't do? If my some freak chance you can stand to be hit by one, how about four? It's just amazing how tough people are from behind a keyboard.

You mean would I willingly stand there and not defend myself? No. But would I go crying to mommy about it and have her try to defend me? No. If you can't deal with it, quit the team. There is no shame in him quitting the team. That's football though.

<<i bet the majority of you guys never even played organized football. I played Div 1 in highschool. Tackling someone without pads is BS.>>

I played organized ball in school as well, and I played hundreds of full-tackle games in college (at the U of Texas at Austin). You can tackle just fine with no pads.

What do you think the QB goes through when you screw up and miss your blocks? The coach was simply trying to illustrate that to this guy so he would focus better on his blocks. And the crybaby goes to mommy.... yech.

HE DID QUIT THE TEAM. He went home and explained, like ANYONE dropping out of college would, what had happend and his mother took this action. Do you think you could convince your family to do anything diferent. I know once my Mom sets her mind to something FORGET ABOUT IT!

No. I am talking about tackling a person who is not wearing pads! That is toal BS!
I have never seen any program that promotes tackling players that aren't wearing
protective gear...espescially when the tackler is wearing pads!

I played D-I College football for 5 years (i got redshirted my freshman year). If this kid was tackled without having any pads on, that's just crazy. They just don't do sh!t like that. You may have to go through a few bull-in-the-ring sessions, or some other lesson teaching drill, but you atleast have a fighting chance in those situations. If this happened they way I keep hearing, then action should be taken against the coach or whoever was involved...

are you sure he wasn't wearing any pads. usually football players wear full padding in practice, if he wasn't wearing padding, then he surely wasn't ready for 1A football. plus O'Leary said when they do the same drill with the QB they know not to tackle so they should've known not to tackle another player during this drill.

tagej, Organized collage games? but not quite on a collage team? Which leads me to believe you didn't have to deal with some 300lb line-backer. That's a whole different world bud. I would not go around calling a guy a whimp for going thorugh what you are not willing to do. (get tackled by 4 linebackers and not have gear on) You were not there, you have no idea what this guy went through. I'm sure the guy has played tackle football before and is well aware of what goes on. Don't you think that for this guy to quit he was hurt pretty bad and it was a BS stunt (while not having gear on) that was un professional and shouldn't have happened to begin with? You are just among the many here that are too quick to call someone names because of some event that you didn't even see so could not know the full situation.

Are there 300+ lb. players in rugby? I didn't think so, if there is, show me, i'd love to see it, let alone 4 of em.

I play football, Div 1A highscool ball. Just take my word when i say you don't wanna be hit by anyone when your not wearing pads, let alone 2 300 lb. monsters, i should know, i'm a 260 sophmore monster.

Having 600 lbs. of muscle landing on ya isn't fun.
