Lately i've been getting cramps in the arch of my feet, when sleeping and also when I swim. When asleep I find that my feet are usually pressed against the endboard of my fourpost bed which may be putting strain on my foot muscles. I'm usually very good about hydrating well too :(

Any idea how I can stop these SOBs? It's miserable to be woken up intense pain, or have to hobble over to the sideand look like a wierdo at the pool.

I get these ever so often but usually I get them at random times, they just creep up on me. I use to get them in my legs which would make me limp around for the rest of the day. Just ride it out man, its good pain!

I used to get them heaps when I was young during swimming training. Not so anymore, tho I must admit that now I swim to keep fit not for competition so the less intensity might be one explaination. Maybe it's something to do with young people... argh... now I feel old

I used to get them a lot when I ran track. They suck and hurt like hell, I can definitely relate.

I also get cramps in my feet if I sit a certain way. I just hurry up and get my foot out of that position as soon as possible before it gets so bad I can't move it for a minute. But the leg cramps are the worst. Thankfully I have those about once a year, and I'm sure as hell not looking forward to my next one. It does feel good...after you've thwarted it. But not during the cramp. Sometimes I get them in the middle of the night and I have no idea what the hell is going on until it's too late. I'm usually not awakened until the pain is at its acme. Generally you can still feel the ache slightly for the whole day.

As I understand it they're often related to magnesium or potassium deficiencies. Sry for the pain dude, they suck. Not as much as jaw cramps in my opinion, but suck all the same.

Also try stretching more. I don't recall having a problem ever since I started stretching more frequently, but I shouldn't say anything too soon.

What stretch would work your foot muscles?

I suffer from them every summer!
The best things I've found to prevent them are Bananas and Gatorade.
Have at least 1 banana a day and 1 Qt. of Gatorade.
I forgot both last Saturday and woke up in the middle of the night with a SUPER severe cramp, or, as they are called around here, "Charley Horse".
I am still limping and sore here on Thursday from it!

Your foot cramps are most likely caused by flat feet. It may help to purchase an arch support (ie. Dr. Scholl's) and if this does not stop the cramps then a visit to a podiatrist most certainly will. Podiatrist's are able to obtain a mold of your feet to have custom arch supports built for you. A podiatrist can also take a look at the way you stand and walk to see if anything else is wrong.

Ahhh Gatorade! I drank gatorade with every meal this last year, got 6 cavities, and have stopped. This might explain it.
