Foolish to get E2180 or E4500 right now?

Current 939 setup:
NF4 Ultra-D
Opteron 165 @ 2.8Ghz
2GB DDR1
BFG 8800GT OC 512MB

I'm itching to upgrade finally to C2D with the following in mind:

Abit IP35-E
E2180 or E4500
2GB PC6400 DDR2
Scythe Ninja (already have with my Opteron)

Given that the 45nm chips are only a few weeks away (hopefully), would it be foolish to get a E21 or E45 series now? I'm not really interested in jumping to a Quad C2D now and I could offset most of the upgrade cost by selling my current MB/Opteron/RAM.

I'm thinking of getting the IP35-E now since it keeps jumping in and out of stock plus the set of 2GB A-Data PC4200 at Newegg for $28 AR. I just don't know if I can keep all this new hardware around for a month or so until the 45nm C2D arrives. :)

I just got my parts like...this weekend in the mail; go ahead and go for 4GB of the DDR800 stuffs; it's so cheap and will only be getting more expensive.

Plan is to get the highest rated quad Penryn when it's end of the line, drop it in and overclock some more and be good for a couple years.

to blue weasel, how does an opteron 165 in your sig compare to an athlon 64 x2 4800? or any intel c2d chip? What is its performance on par with?

From here, it seems that a X2 5400+ (2.8Ghz, closest to my Opteron I could find) is approximately equal to a stock E6600. Granted, that's just a single benchmark, but close enough.

So support for the quad Penryn is unknown for the IP35-E? What about the DS3L?

Why is DDR2 800 going to get more expensive? Thanks

so im guessing that an opty 165 is an amd 64 x2 5400+ in disguise?

about 45nm quads, im only saying asus & gigabyte as those two brands will be the first to have bios updates or support if needed for compatibility.

No; IP35-e will def be getting (matter of fact I think it already has) support for Penryn.

Also to Sorry, the manufacturers have already cut back production. I mean seriously, 4GB for $75? That's just too good and it's amazing we got this far already with it. Even more absurd-- did you see that 4GB for $25 DDR666 HP ram deal the other day?

Uhhh...you have a dual-core Opty at 2.8GHz and you want to upgrade why exactly? You probably won't see huge differences, especially going with the lower cache series (e2/e4). If you're going to jump on the C2D bandwagon, at least do yourself the favor of waiting for Penryn (e8400 should suit you very well).

I could upgrade to C2D with a new MB and RAM for $100, possibly less, after selling my 939 system. Who knows what s939 and DDR1 prices are going to do, but a C2D upgrade for ~$100 isn't shabby.

Besides, what were you running immediately before you upgraded to the E6400 and 4GB of RAM? ;)

[Edit]

E8400 Review

After seeing some reviews on the E8400, I'm gonna wait. Seeing a 4.0Ghz OC with much lower temperatures and slightly lower power consumption for only ~$180 is worth it for me.

If the price is right, why not?

I got my E4500-Retail through Fry's deal for $119 w/ECS board. It comes out to about 85 bucks for the chip which is really good IMHO considered it sells retail for at least $115. Plus I need that crappy board for my HTPC project that uses the E2140 from Microcenter.

I already bought 2GB 44412 OCZ Reaper back last summer that I let my brother use for his Q6600 (free burn in hehe). All I had left to buy were a new case (CM 690 deal @CompUSA; newegg sold out when I was going to buy it) that is future proof and can accomodate longer VGA Cards, new PSU (CM 750W from SVC), 775 HSF (10 bucks...also SVC), motherboard (MSI Neo-2FR; IP35E sold out temporarily sold out at the time plus I like ICH9R better), a new SATAII HD (all my previous systems are IDE based) and new DVDRW.

The only thing I am waiting now is to build them all then wait for G92 GTS prices to come down to say about 250-270ish with a mild upgrade during the summer for a Q9450 then I should be set until next year.

I don't think I will be upgrading to any CL3 DDR2800s anytime soon and I'm not too sure about spending any 1066 or higher DDR2s either just because at summer 2009 DDR3 prices should be near the level of DDR2s earlier last year.

I would get one of the current conroes now, and just upgrade in feb/mar, once oc guides and all have come out for the 8xxx chips, prices settle, and the best deals are found.

With E2xxx and E4xxx series CPU's typically topping out in the 3.0-3.2Ghz range of OC's, you aren't going to see much of an improvement over a 2.8Ghz Opty 165. I came from the same chip and OC that you currently have, and I've got an E2140 now that can do 3Ghz. The difference in performance is only about 10-15%. An E4xxx at those clocks would probably net you an extra 5%. It's the 4MB C2Ds that you really want. You'd probably get close to a 10% boost over the E4xxx at the same clock speed in most apps and games. They also overclock higher.

I'd grab either an E6750 or try to wait for cheap Penryns.
