Food Thread: The Chicken Wing Debate

I've been having this debate for years.

I go to the sports bar, I say I want 10 wings. They give me 5 chicken wings, split in two.

When as a society did one whole chicken wing become two wings? This pisses me off so much because its WRONG!

What I hate is when you ask for chicken wings and they give you some sorta juvenile pigeon appendage that has the meat equivalent of a small lizard.

it might be the difference in a buffalo wing and or a chicken wing.

I agree with your logic though.

If you go to KFC and order a wing it will include both sections of the wing.

QFT. A wing really means "wing piece". So there are 4 wings per chicken.

What difference does it make? If they sold them as "full" wings they'd just charge twice as much per piece. You know what you're going to get when you order wings. I've only been to one restaurant that sold them as full wings (including the little flappy thing at the end), and that was made clear on the menu.

what I hate is when you order chicken wings and you get drumsticks

wtf? did I order a lot of little baby chicken legs?

I know of no restaurant in this area that serves a whole chicken wing. As another poster said, if you go to KFC and order a wing you will probably get a whole wing. If you go to publix, you will get a whole wing. If you go anywhere else, a chicken wing split into two becomes called a wing.

And this isnt a "buffalo" or not debate. EVERY PLACE THAT HAS WINGS ON THE MENU it says "# wings" and they are in peices.

speaking of Hooters, we went there the other day and they have some wing that isnt on the menu, Daytona or something

3 Mile Hot Sauce (like, regular hot, unless you are a pussy) and BBQ sauce

They were pretty decent actually

Notice the difference. A wing (singular) = a whole chicken wing.

Wings (plural) refers to wing pieces.

First, don't yell at me, you are almost close enough to reach over and pimp slap 😛

Seriously though, the reason is that by having sections, when they throw them in the deep fryer, they get nice and crispy all the way around. While that may not matter to you, I have a friend that would go ape shit if they did not do it that way. The crispy end with the cartilage is his favorite part, I kid you not.

They mix up their menu every so often.
I know cuz I visit three times a week.
I hate wings, I just go for teh wimenz. But usually after 4 or 5 hours they insist I look at the menu or leave. So thats how I know what they got.

Uh ohs, did the noob break off more than he can chew?

09 reg date no care?

Fried Chicken:
mini-drumstick + middle + wingtip = 1 wing

Buffalo Wings:
mini-drumstick = 1 wing
middle = 1 wing
wingtip = never included

I've had whole chicken wings before, fried and it is all equally crispy. The only reason they are split is to give the image of more, when you are getting less.

And yes to the other poster, "wings" refers to the plural however nobody orders one wing or one peice of a wing, so by virtue of them ordering more than one there is a clear plurality to the naming convention.

Yes, I used to do technical writing.

When you order [buffalo]wings, the word "wings" is not meant literally since half the time, they're drumsticks. So just like it's also not made of buffalo because obviously, buffalo's don't have wings, when you order wings, you get 10 wings as in 10 pieces and not 10 wings as in whole chicken wings... ok? That is also why when you order wings in KFC, you get whole wings because you're actually ordering wings and not a name of a dish.

Yea I made that all up.

It's easier to eat pre-separated wing sections when they're covered with hot sauce, rather than separating them after the fact.
