So, Food Stamps sucks. How would you haters fix the system?

If someone truly can't afford to eat, each week they can get a voucher for various staples. Rice. Beans. Potatoes. Bread. Cheese. Enough to survive. If they want to eat anything more than sustenance level food, they can get a job and do what the rest of us do. Work our way to a more luxurious lifestyle. Sorry, but I don't work so other people can eat steak.

Organic eggs from non grain fed chickens. Organic non grain fed chicken breasts. 3 mornings out of the week I have bacon from 2 different bacon of the month club's I belong to. I have a subscription for the bacon of the season too, which is extra uber bacon you get shipped 4 times a year for $199. I eat lots of Rib Eyes, lots of sandwiches with Parmesan crusted & Soppressata Salami. I got a ton of different cheese in my fridge, nothing super fancy, but even mid grade cheese isn't all that cheap.

I enjoy eating, I'm not trying to have ground chuck and crap like that. I wouldn't argue with anyone who calls me stupid for spending $1300 a year just on Bacon, I have friends who barely spend that on food total. I dunno I just like to eat so I go overboard with it. I also make big meals, like for breakfast this morning a 4 egg Omelette with 3 different kinds of cheese & chili. Biscuits & gravy and 1/2 a pack of bacon from my bacon of the month club. The bacon was the rest of a frozen pack I had from the summer seasonal pack, so I hit $25 today on bacon alone lol. Lunch was a chicken Cesar salad with 10oz of Organic chicken breasts and dinner was a home made pot pie with organic chicken. Eating a lot of food can get expensive real quick unless you eat crap like 99 cent frozen Banquet meals.

A lot of what I eat's organic, which is uber fucking expensive if you have any sort of appitite, but there's a big difference in taste between say regular and organic eggs. Same with everything else it just tastes better. Costs an arm and a leg though.

As long as you aren't spending taxpayer money to eat like that, more power to ya. Sounds like good food.

If someone is living on the government dime, they can eat the most basic food to keep from going hungry.

AT never fails to amuse with the extremes.

Either everyone is a millionaire married to a supermodel and living the high life or they're living like a pauper. LOL.

His pricing is higher than mine for a family of four and we eat well. What's so funny?

My wife spends between $95 and $110 per week on food. We make pretty much everything because it's cheaper and healthier. Tortillas, bread, spaghetti, tomato sauce, etc.

Aye. However, taking away their benefits or reducing their benefits will just make them angry and violent.

Making the claim that it'll force them to get jobs is fucking ignorant LOL.

So you find it acceptable that a class of humans exist merely to consume? They produce nothing but the threat of violence if you take any steps to curb their consumption to sustenance levels.

Seems to me those kind of people shouldn't be encouraged, they should be put down.

When prisons follow, then I can agree.

I do believe in limiting the cash, but I don't believe in limiting their choices.

I supplement my fiancée's food purchasing now. We are eating economical choices and it's still more than her stipend.

If it was just a couple of adults struggling then the rice and beans approach works short term (you will not be healthy for long on that diet), with kids they will just refuse to eat, refuse to do home work, etc.

It's easy to make such statements when you'd never be their target.

Sadly, if most could find a job that really worked then they would.

My fiancée is looking to find a job that would make child care costs realistic.

Paper(cardboard) cartons. 1/2 gallon cartons typically have up to 6 week expiration dates.

UHT pasteurized milk(most organic, any milk stored at room temp, and any milk bought outside NA more or less) is good for up to ~6 months.

I used to by paper cartons all the time. Then I moved to a place that has aldi's and a 1/2 gallon in a paper carton from anywhere is more than a 1 gallon at Aldi's($2.19, was $1.99 until 2 weeks ago).

We used to get aldi's milk (by far the cheapest) BUT it would go bad in a week or less. Sometimes it was bad within a day or two.

Best place i found to get milk is Sams club. it's cheap and stays fresh the longest (not that it last longin my home). 2nd is walmart.

I think its the fact they do so much with a high turnover.

hyvee is damn good too. but its rather expensive but last about as long as sams club.

Country Fresh milk is the same way. It goes bad so fast and its more expensive than stuff that lasts. I hate HATE stinky milk. It ruins me for 6 months.

If the have nots are stealing my money by treat of force of my money then I say bring it.

Look at this thread. "oh, but they will starve and riot"

Like I fucking care. Let them riot. I got mine.

I was broke as shit and lived off taco bell bean burritos as a treat.

Fuck the FSA. Get to work and make something of yourself. I just finished a 70 hour week. Get paid.

Hunger is a hell of a motivator.

Sounds like your Aldi has a handling issue. I've been getting milk from them for a couple years now, and have never gotten a bad gallon. I've kept it as long as 2 weeks past the sell by date, and it's been fine.

its possible. the aldi's also has the worst possible "fresh" fruit. half of it is rotten and soft.

but sams is $2.39 a gallon and i think aldis is $2 a gallon.

I think the milk is $2.39 here, but I'm drawing a blank. The price has been fluctuating lately, and I'm not sure what it was last time. Sometimes it's $1.99. For comparison, "cheap" milk at any other store is $3.60+.

Their produce can be iffy. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's... not so good. I've never seen anything outright bad, but definitely it's second or third pick, and not premium. Sometimes they get avocados dirt cheap. I've seen them as low as 29¢ each, and I'll buy a bunch then.

The kids should not be punished for the parents failure, which puts me in favor of school breakfast and lunch programs, but you can't trust parents to spend a dime on kids wisely, so at least a good breakfast and lunch, with the bare minimum for parents.

Main change I would make, make welfare and food stamps have no restrictions on who can get them, only on what they can be used for. Remove the penalty of losing benefits if somebody works, and maybe a few will work for beer and cigarettes.

How the hell can a family of 4 adults not live off $800 a month for groceries? I spend about 2-300 a month on groceries for 2 adults and a toddler. We eat pretty well...what are these people buying that $800 isn't enough?

i spend about $200 a month on groceries for 1 person, so $800 for 4 doesn't seem unreasonable.

you can't buy everything you want. you only buy what's on sale, and to make your $ go farther, use coupons.

The people in the article seem like freeloaders. You have 4 adults and none apparently work, with the excuse that one had a kid recently and the other will have one soon. Those are lame excuses and the lady whining about losing $40 (or whatever the number was) was comical. I have an idea -- go get a job!

That is WIC, and specifically that card that must be fulfilled in full and sometimes with only certain brands.

The food items provided by WIC are juice (single strength), milk, breakfast cereal, cheese, eggs, fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread, whole grain items including brown rice and tortillas, fish (canned)(for Exclusively Breastfed Mothers), legumes (dry/canned), and peanut butter. The program also provides tofu, soy milk, and medical foods for children and women with various metabolic or other diseases. Since the white potato was deemed less nutritious than other produce, the WIC commission banned white potatoes from the list, causing protests. Organic fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains are covered under WIC while organic milk, cheese, juice, peanut butter and eggs are not covered under the program.

What sucks with that program is too many of the people in line force the checker to do the shopping and places like Publix don't tell the customer "No". Fortunately, they also will usually open up a new register to handle the backlog caused by that. What even more worse is those that come in with several cards to be filled out. They end up with enough baby products to stock a small store and sadly at the local swap shops you will see these items up for sale for pennies on the dollar.

Most 'food stamps' are now no different than a debit card. You scan it and it will even tell you the total you have to pay in cash/other methods for items that did not qualify.

When my fiancée and I shop she just scans her card first and then I pick up everything else.
