Food stamps

Poor shopping choices. I should hire myself out as a grocery consultant, and teach people how to shop. When you're short on cash, you can't get everything you want.

Her adult daughters who live with her aren't in a position to work -- one is a new mom, and another is due to give birth soon.

Where are the babies daddies?

Four adults and not even one of them is working? I am a liberal democrat and I have no sympathy for these people. They don't deserve benefits.

Totally agree.

I dunno, some guy in the other thread claimed he was spending $30/day on food. $30 is enough to last me for almost a whole week and I eat quite a bit.

I figure $2 per meal, 3 meals per day. That $2 figure is highballed a bit, so it allows for snacks, and miscellaneous stuff. That's $42 per week, or $672 per month for a family of 4. There's much savings in buying/cooking in bulk though, so I totally wouldn't be stressing a $600 check to buy food.

I seriously doubt these figures. Every case I know of a family on food stamps , they earn around $230 max for one given month. That is a family making under $15,000 a year where at least one person works. I seriously doubt any state government is giving away $800 a month to any family. I just do not believe that. It is extremely difficult to qualify for stamps and even then in most cases the benefits are temporary.
People would love to believe the government is just giving away masses of money in benefits to practically anyone that asks.
Simply not true.

I have personally watched many, and I mean many, people go to the local convienience store, order 5-6 footlong subs, 3-4 bags of chips and 2-3 2 liters of pop and pay with their benefit cards. Makes me disgusted. One of my good freinds was pissed his old lady got a job after her yearly layoff because they would lose out on the food stamp and other benefits they are accustomed to over the winter. WTF! And I know plenty of people that get in excess of 4-500 dollars a month for a family of 4.

When you spend money which does not belong to you, that you did not earn, its never enough.

We are a family of 4, based on our experience, if the need be, we can easily do with 3 to 400 dollars a month.

My granpa was once on an aeroplane in the war. Yes, the big one. The war that is. Well the plane was big too, but I digest. In any event at some point they came under fire and the pilot yelled out: BAILOUT! BAILOUT!

I'm not on food stamps, but I spent somewhere around $25 a day on food on days I eat at home. If I was on food stamps though I sure as shit would be happy with $200 a month.

So, Food Stamps sucks. How would you haters fix the system?

I think the amounts given out need to be reduced if the figures in the article are true. The program should be used to assist, not fund someone's food budget. There's something wrong when someone on food stamps is spending more money on food and eating better than someone with a decent job.

Honestly, the real way to fix it is change what EBT covers. At this point, many states don't allow buying alcohol or tobacco products or food that's prepared by someone else or food that's served hot. In the same way that can be regulated at the check stand, the items that are allowed can be further throttled. If you're on food stamps, you shouldn't be buying bags of Doritos, soft drinks, CheezIts, cookies, etc.

Beans, rice, flour, some kind of fat and chicken scraps ready to pick up at the depot. Must sign for it, finger printed and present photo ID every time.

Fixed.

It will be fixed when it's EXTREMELY hard to use. The problem will fix itself. Hunger is a hell of a motivator, make it motivate them.
